Overview
The Record
Halcyon is an orbital medical habitat built for cases ordinary hospitals cannot safely receive: dangerous contagion, prolonged isolation, difficult recovery, and biological study requiring absolute control of the environment. Its clinical rings contain treatment wards, rehabilitation spaces, research chambers, and quarantine sectors capable of operating for months without sharing air, water, or personnel.
There is no atmosphere beyond the station. The inhabited rings maintain a sterile nitrogen-oxygen mixture at roughly eighty-five percent of the pressure common to most settled worlds. Each quarantine sector has an independent life-support loop and can be sealed completely from the rest of Halcyon. Patients may share a station without ever sharing a molecule of circulated air.
Halcyon is built upon a hard proposition: sometimes separating a patient from everyone who loves them is itself part of the treatment. The station has made that necessity into a discipline. Its rooms, communications systems, and care protocols are designed to preserve human contact without compromising isolation, because survival bought through abandonment is not considered a complete recovery.
The station is governed by the Halcyon Medical Directorate under an Ilyran public charter. Its physicians and administrators control treatment, quarantine, and internal operations. Ilyra appoints external auditors, guarantees the station’s neutrality, and may activate reserved capacity during a system-wide emergency. The Directorate’s emblem identifies Halcyon’s personnel and facilities, but carries no territorial claim; binding external acts are made in Ilyra’s name.
Every arrival is screened before entering the inhabited rings. Routine patients require an Ilyran referral or an accepted institutional guarantee. Any vessel reporting suspected contagion is diverted directly to an isolated dock, where Halcyon assumes authority over disembarkation, testing, and release. Once quarantine is declared, neither rank nor urgency permits a patient to bypass it.

Halcyon is an Ilyran medical station governed by an independent professional directorate under public charter. The Medical Directorate controls treatment, quarantine, staffing, and internal law. Ilyra appoints external auditors, guarantees the station’s neutrality, and may activate reserved wards during a system-wide emergency, but it does not direct individual care.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter46 km
- Mass0.000000002 Earth masses
- Gravity0.35 g
Halcyon is exposed to vacuum beyond its hull. The clinical rings maintain a closely filtered nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere at roughly eighty-five percent of the pressure common to most inhabited worlds. Each quarantine sector has an independent air system and can be sealed completely from the rest of the station without interrupting treatment.

Halcyon’s outer structure follows a controlled eighteen-hour attitude cycle for thermal balance, communications, and docking alignment. Its internal habitat rings rotate independently, producing approximately 0.35 standard gravity within the occupied wards. Patient areas use adjustable twenty-four-hour lighting cycles, which can be altered when treatment, sleep regulation, or a patient’s home-world rhythm requires it.
Culture
The Twofold
Menders and Sealers share Halcyon’s wards, and nearly every difficult case becomes an argument over where one duty ends and the other begins. The Mender asks what the patient requires to recover. The Sealer asks what everyone beyond the door may be required to endure if it opens too soon.
A patient placed in isolation remains under a Sealer’s charge until the Menders judge that separation is no longer part of the treatment. That judgment may restore a person to everyone they love or expose an entire station to what they carry. Halcyon asks its practitioners to make that choice every day, and regards it as the hardest work done there.

Travel Notes
Every vessel, patient, and visitor is medically screened before entering Halcyon’s inhabited rings. Routine admission requires an Ilyran referral or an accepted institutional guarantee. Any arrival reporting suspected contagion is diverted directly to an isolated dock, where the Medical Directorate controls disembarkation, testing, quarantine, and release. No prior clearance overrides that authority.
