Orren

The Tended Valleys

Orren’s pressurized valleys grow fruit, grain, seed stock, and specialty foods under an Aurelian charter that ties every harvest to maintained air and water.

Overview

The Record

Orren grows fruit, grain, seed stock, and specialty foods in valleys made habitable by continuous engineering. Linked pressure belts hold breathable air over the farms, while reservoir caverns, atmospheric machinery, and windbreak forests keep water and weather within the limits cultivation requires.

Valley cooperatives manage land, irrigation, labor, and receiving rights. Aurel maintains the pressure works, sets export quotas, guarantees the trade lanes, and represents Orren externally. The arrangement gives 1.1 million residents reliable markets and life-support infrastructure while limiting how much of a harvest the cooperatives may keep or redirect.

Quickeners rotate among farms during the portions of the long light cycle that decide planting and growth. Cellarers keep seed and harvest through the dark phase. The most valued practitioners are still those who find a buried water leak before pressure, soil, or crop makes the failure visible.

Orren’s output depends on systems no valley controls alone. A cooperative can govern its fields, but not the Aurelian quotas or the shared atmospheric works. The moon feeds a broader agricultural order because its valleys are productive; it remains dependent because productivity stops when air, water, or access does.

Aurel

Orren is an Aurelian-chartered agricultural dependency. Valley cooperatives govern land, water allocation, labor, and local access; Aurel sets export quotas, maintains shared pressure infrastructure, guarantees trade lanes, and represents the moon externally. Cooperative signs identify individual valleys, while Aurelian agricultural stamps authorize exports. There is no moon-wide sovereign crest.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter1,260 km
  • Mass0.0005261 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.05 g

Orren’s exterior atmosphere is marginal. Linked valley pressure belts maintain breathable conditions over farms and settlements, supported by atmospheric works, windbreak forests, and reservoir caverns. Pressure loss, water failure, and biological contamination are connected hazards: a damaged belt can threaten both inhabitants and crops before another valley is affected.

Orren is tidally locked to Oranth, rotating once during each 17.956-standard-day orbit. Oranth remains fixed above one hemisphere, while the sunrise-to-sunrise cycle runs slightly longer than the orbit as Oranth moves around Vya and Veo. Farm calendars divide the extended light and darkness into field, lamp, storage, and maintenance watches. Eclipses are planned as shorter cold events within that cycle.

Culture

The Twofold

Quickeners rotate among the pressurized valleys, usually one to a farm during critical growth periods, and the allocation is a standing subject of cooperative politics. Cellarers preserve seed stock and harvest through the long season. Practitioners who reveal leaks in buried waterworks are valued because they protect cultivation, pressure stability, and settlement at once.

Travel

Travel Notes

Aurelian cargo lanes serve Orren frequently, but all arrivals undergo biological quarantine. Passenger traffic uses two public valley ports; entry to agricultural districts requires a receiving cooperative. Visitors must remain within marked pressure networks, and cargo suspected of carrying pests or disease is isolated even when an Aurelian schedule says it should move.
