Osira

The Kept Page

A Namari-protected archive moon that preserves disputed records, trains their custodians, and reviews historical claims without surrendering control of its stacks.

Overview

The Record

Osira gives the system somewhere to keep a record outside the authority of the government that filed it. Its 16.4 million people inhabit cool archive cities, pale-stone colleges, and cultivated lower terraces. The farms support the moon without making it a food exporter; its consequential work is preserving, copying, teaching, and comparing documents.

Corthane’s repositories set preservation standards and control access to the oldest collections. Brenor trains historians, archivists, conservators, translators, and scholars of treaty law, then reviews evidence submitted in disputes over inheritances, boundaries, treaties, and historical claims. Osira cannot compel another realm to accept a finding. Its judgments matter because the records remain under custodians trusted not to rewrite them for a patron.

Those custodians govern the archives, schools, and access rules from Corthane. Namar protects Osira, represents the charter externally when required, and has no authority to edit a collection or open a sealed stack. The arrangement gives a lesser moon protection without placing its method under the protecting power.

Osira’s Gloam practice is archival work made explicit. Sextons keep sealed collections intact until their appointed opening, while scholars distinguish patient concealment from suppression. The moon’s influence ends where documentary trust ends: it has no fleet with which to enforce a conclusion, and every restricted shelf must balance preservation against the risk that a record kept too well will arrive too late to matter.

Namar

Osira is a chartered scholarly protectorate of Namar. Osira’s custodians govern the archives, schools, preservation standards, and access rules from Corthane. Their authority extends to collections and institutions rather than to a royal court or dynasty.

Namar guarantees external protection and may represent the charter in foreign affairs. Namari officials cannot edit, suppress, reorganize, or open Osiran collections, and a Namari warrant does not replace institutional permission to use a restricted stack. The protectorate secures Osira’s independence of method rather than subordinating it.

Osira’s institutional seal identifies the custodial authority under which records are kept. It is not a sovereign crest. The moon can admit readers, deny copies, preserve deposits, and issue scholarly findings; it cannot compel another realm to accept those findings.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter3,710 km
  • Mass0.017 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.2 g

Osira has a cool, breathable atmosphere with little industrial haze. The archive cities occupy dry uplands where low humidity favors long-term storage; lower towns are milder and damper, requiring tighter environmental control around collections. Winter reduces visitors and outside moisture but increases the need to heat occupied repositories.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order375
  • Orbital Radius5,320,000 km
  • Orbital Period45.773 days
  • Rotation1,098.55 hours
  • Inclination0.28 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.006

Osira rotates once during each 45.773-standard-day orbit and is tidally locked to Oranth, which remains fixed above the inner face. Its sunrise-to-sunrise cycle is slightly longer than the orbit, so archive schedules divide the extended light and darkness into ordinary reading, lamp, and conservation shifts. Outer-face colleges never see Oranth but follow the same stellar cycle.

Eclipses interrupt starlight during many orbits. They are entered in observation and conservation schedules, but ordinary indoor work continues under controlled lighting.

Culture

The Twofold

Sextons keep Osira’s sealed stacks, preserving documents until the terms governing access permit them to be opened. Gloam is treated as method rather than refusal: concealment protects a record from loss, alteration, or premature use, while catalogues preserve the fact that it exists. Scholars still dispute when careful custody becomes hoarding, especially when a closed collection bears on a present claim.

Travel

Travel Notes

  1. Ordinary Embrace routes serve Osira, but arrivals must name a receiving archive, college, or public destination before landing at an archive city. A Namari protection can ease approach; it does not authorize entry to a repository.

  2. Reading, copying, depositing, and submitting evidence are separate permissions. Public rooms require ordinary registration, while restricted stacks require institutional approval and often a letter of introduction. Visitors who arrive without a receiving institution remain within the public districts.
