Mender

Healing

An uncommon Dawn practitioner associated with healing, formally examined only by Ilyra through a witnessed record of work rather than a claimed limit.

uncommonRarity, not rank. A practitioner is one thing for life.

A Mender heals. The classification covers recoveries attributed to Dawn practice without separating them from medicine. On Sorell, physicians work beside Menders and mark a patient’s recovery by tending a plant dedicated in that person’s name. The ceremony records the recovery while declining to assign it to practitioner, physician, or both.

Ilyra trains Menders alongside its medical schools and conducts the only formal examination recognized across the system. The Examiners certify a witnessed record: what the candidate did, who observed it, and what result followed. Their paper does not establish the outer limit of the ability, grant a monopoly on healing, or direct treatment outside the schools that issued it.

Those limits remain unsettled, and most Menders decline to state them. Critics call that evasion; patients often call it prudence. Nobody claims a Mender restores the dead. Many claim the practice shortens a fever, while Velyrian schools have argued for centuries over whether the difference can be measured without reaching a common conclusion.
