Tirren

The Seed Vault

An Aurelian research moon where seed colleges test crops, soils, and closed ecologies for settlements at the edge of habitability.

Overview

The Record

Tirren learns how crops fail before a settlement depends on them. Its seed colleges test resilient lines, marginal soils, and closed ecologies inside controlled basins and glassed valleys built to reproduce conditions that ordinary farms avoid.

Failure is part of the method. Quickeners test what can be made to grow under stress, while Cellarers preserve dormant lines whose trials failed or whose intended season has not arrived. A negative result remains useful only if the seed, conditions, and record survive together.

The colleges set research priorities and retain academic authority within their basins. Aurel funds the pressure works, carries approved lines through its agricultural network, and controls patents, treaties, and external licensing. Tirren’s academic emblem identifies the colleges; it does not authorize them to make agreements in their own name.

This arrangement gives the research moon access to wider fields and markets while limiting what it may release. A promising crop cannot leave a quarantine basin merely because it grows, and a college cannot turn a successful trial into an independent export right.

Aurel

Tirren is an Aurelian agricultural research dependency. The seed colleges govern research priorities, methods, and access within their basins. Aurel funds the pressure works, represents the moon externally, and controls patents, treaties, and export licenses.

The colleges share an academic emblem identifying their work. It is an institutional mark; binding external acts are issued in Aurel’s name.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter1,220 km
  • Mass0.0004935 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.05 g

Tirren’s air is breathable inside controlled research basins and glassed valleys. Beyond them it is thin, dry, and unsuitable for prolonged exposure. Pressure boundaries and quarantine seals keep experimental ecologies from sharing air, soil, or seed unintentionally.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order338
  • Orbital Radius4,680,000 km
  • Orbital Period37.785 days
  • Rotation906.84 hours
  • Inclination0.32 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.005

Tirren rotates once during each 37.785-standard-day orbit and is tidally locked to Oranth. Laboratories use independent clocks and controlled lighting, while open test fields expose crops to the full extended light and dark phases as experimental conditions.

Culture

The Twofold

Tirren’s method is to fail deliberately and preserve the result. Quickeners test what will grow under controlled stress; Cellarers hold dormant lines that failed, remain unsafe, or await conditions not yet encountered. Neither practice can waive quarantine or authorize release.

Travel

Travel Notes

Researchers and sealed agricultural cargo arrive through Aurelian lanes. Declare all biological material before docking and present credentials from a seed college or the Aurelian crop office. Visitors remain within their assigned basin; moving seed, soil, tools, or clothing across a quarantine boundary requires separate clearance.
