Thelune

The Long Memory

A Serathi-protected monastic moon whose orders preserve tombs, temples, and an astronomical register extending across three millennia.

Overview

The Record

Thelune keeps a record long enough to outlast most explanations. Its monastic orders maintain temples, tomb precincts, and an unbroken astronomical register whose public sequence reaches across roughly three millennia.

Observation is an obligation of custody rather than a search for novelty. The orders record positions and times, publish the sequence, and defend the archives that make comparison possible. They regard publication and protection as the same duty performed twice: a record hidden forever has failed, and a record left undefended will not remain public.

Sextons keep the tombs and sealed collections. The orders also preserve claims that Seers once came from Thelune, though none has appeared recently and no order will confirm the old accounts. The register continues whether the claim is true or not.

Thelune governs itself under a protective covenant with Serath. Its orders control the archives, cloisters, and tomb precincts; Serath guarantees neutrality and defense without acquiring the right to open a collection or direct an observance. The arrangement protects the Long Memory while limiting its reach to evidence, custody, and counsel.

Serath

Thelune is an autonomous monastic holding protected by covenant with Serath. Its orders govern the cloisters, archives, observatories, and tomb precincts. Serath guarantees neutrality and external defense but cannot direct an observance or compel an archive to open.

The orders share a custodial emblem identifying their common obligations. It is an institutional mark, not a sovereign crest; Serath’s name appears on the protective covenant rather than on Thelune’s internal warrants.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter1,180 km
  • Mass0.0004609 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.05 g

Thelune has a tenuous nitrogen atmosphere, severe cold, and little weather. Cloisters, archives, and tomb approaches maintain breathable pressure, while exposed travel requires independent breathing equipment and thermal protection.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order138
  • Orbital Radius2,020,000 km
  • Orbital Period10.715 days
  • Rotation257.16 hours
  • Inclination0.22 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.005

Thelune rotates once during each 10.715-standard-day orbit and is tidally locked to Oranth. The extended stellar light cycle and frequent eclipses are observed with unusual precision. Monastic clocks preserve the continuous register rather than forcing observance into a shorter civil day.

Culture

The Twofold

Sextons keep Thelune’s tombs and sealed collections, preserving what must remain intact until its appointed opening. The orders also retain claims that Seers once came from the moon, though none has appeared recently and no order confirms the accounts. The astronomical register is maintained independently of either claim.

Travel

Travel Notes

Arrange a receiving order before arrival. Pilgrim and scholarly traffic uses designated approaches, and unscheduled overflight of tomb precincts is forbidden. Public observations may be consulted by appointment; archive rooms, sealed collections, and tomb approaches require separate sponsorship.
