Overview
The Record
Rethis tells Kharad when the Deep can be entered. Observatory networks on its bare plateaus watch Oranth’s storms, radiation, magnetic sheets, and upper-atmospheric conditions, then issue the forecasts used to open, delay, or close a descent. The Deep remains inside Oranth; Rethis supplies the warning from above it.
The moon’s 140,000 people occupy buried observatory halls, leeward settlements, and the small towns that maintain them. Thin air, violent winds, dust, and ice-crystal haze make exposed work brief and tethered. Towers survive by being anchored deeply and repaired by crews accustomed to losing a work window without notice.
Kharad funds and protects much of the network, authorizes ordinary official access, and relies on Rethin data for Deep operations. Rethis administers the observatories and their scientific method. It can publish a warning that stops a corridor, but it cannot open that corridor or issue a descent permit.
Dawn custom requires observations to be tested, published, and used in service. Descriers complicate that standard. Towers retain them because an early reading of a magnetic surge can save a convoy, then must decide how to record a warning that arrived before an instrument could verify it.
Evidence has tied the Faithful to Rethis, and Kharad has demanded names, dismissals, and access for its own inspectors. The colleges have yielded names and dismissals in form while refusing permanent inspectors inside the halls. Their defense is also their limitation: Kharad cannot readily replace a Rethin forecast, but Rethis cannot survive the loss of Kharadi protection, funding, or confidence in the people reading the instruments.

Rethis is a chartered scientific and technical dependency of Kharad. Its observatory colleges administer the instruments, methods, personnel, and published forecasts used to assess conditions around Oranth. Kharad funds and protects much of the network and retains authority over the Deep operations those forecasts support.
A Rethin warning can delay or close a descent, but it does not grant permission to enter the Deep. Kharad issues the permits, controls the corridors, and represents the dependency externally. Rethis uses an observatory emblem rather than a sovereign crest.
The relationship has been strained since the Faithful were traced to the moon. Kharad has demanded names, dismissals, and the stationing of its own inspectors. Rethis has yielded the first two in form and repeatedly refused the third. Its leverage is narrow: Kharad cannot readily replace the forecasts, while Rethis cannot replace Kharadi protection, funding, or confidence in its staff.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter2,680 km
- Mass0.007 Earth masses
- Gravity0.15 g
Rethis has a thin, turbulent atmosphere that is only marginally breathable on the open plateaus. Settlements use low entrances, pressure-supported inner halls, and sheltered construction on the leeward sides of mesas. Sudden winds, cold, dust, and ice-crystal haze limit exposed work to tethered crews and short shifts.
Orbit and Time
Path Around Oranth
- Orbital Order32
- Orbital Radius580,000 km
- Orbital Period1.648 days
- Rotation39.55 hours
- Inclination0.09 degrees
- Eccentricity0.003
Rethis rotates once during each 1.648-standard-day orbit and is tidally locked to Oranth, which fills much of the inner sky. Its sunrise-to-sunrise cycle is slightly longer than the orbit, and frequent eclipses interrupt the light. Observatory shifts follow measured conditions on Oranth rather than treating magnetic weather as a change to the day itself.
Outer-face plateaus never see Oranth and carry the instruments intended to watch the wider system. Their work continues through the same extended light and darkness under severe wind.
Culture
The Twofold
Rethis keeps Dawn through open observation: a result is expected to be tested, published, and placed in service. Descriers remain on standing contracts because perceiving a magnetic surge before instruments confirm it can save a Deep convoy. Their warnings create a persistent methodological problem, since an urgent reading may be useful before it is independently verifiable.
Travel
Travel Notes
Most visitors dock at a high station and transfer to smaller craft assigned to the observatory or settlement receiving them. Kharadi authorization is the ordinary requirement for official access. Plateau landings proceed only during approved wind windows, and a missed window can hold a vessel in orbit or at station.
Bring pressure support suited to thin air and do not cross an open flat without a local crew, tethering, and a current weather release. Visitors arriving for data or a Deep briefing remain within the authorized observatory complex; a Kharadi warrant does not permit unsupervised entry into instrument halls.
