Oranth

The Sky Father

The blue-gold gas giant at the system’s center supplies its common year, governs every moon’s sky, and yields the atmospheric resources extracted through the Deep.

Overview

The Record

Oranth is the blue-gold gas giant around which the inhabited system is organized. Moons are counted from it, regions are named by their distance from it, and the 427.4-standard-day orbit around Vya and Veo supplies the common astronomical year. No one lives on the planet. Nearly everyone depends on something shaped by it.

Hydrogen, helium, volatile compounds, metallic vapors, and storm-dark clouds form an atmosphere with no solid surface to receive a vessel. Gravity near the visible cloud tops is 7.6 standard gravities, and pressure increases rapidly below them. Ordinary craft cannot descend. Specialized platforms and reinforced vessels can work only the outer accessible bands.

The Deep is the atmospheric extraction operation in those bands. Kharad commands the stations, temporary corridors, permits, and descent crews. Velyrian interests financed much of the infrastructure and retain contractual access without operational command. Material brought up through Kharad supplies foundries across the Grasp, making access to Oranth economically central without making the planet anyone’s territory.

Oranth is also the Sky Father, though cultures disagree about whether that title is devotional, historical, or merely descriptive. On tidally locked moons it hangs fixed over one hemisphere; elsewhere it rises and sets. Its eclipses organize calendars and observances, while its storms give Summoners and Descriers practical work. The planet has no Twofold tradition of its own. It is the condition under which many traditions developed.

Uninhabited

Oranth has no population, government, or sovereign owner. What the powers contest is access. Kharad holds operational command of the Deep, its stations, and its descent corridors; Velyrian investors retain contractual access without authority over crews or routing. No treaty grants ownership of the planet. Kharad can permit or deny an atmospheric descent, but its command of the operation does not make Oranth Kharadi territory.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter143,000 km
  • Mass953.4 Earth masses
  • Gravity7.6 g

Oranth is a hydrogen-and-helium gas giant layered with volatile compounds, metallic vapors, electrical storms, and blue, gold, cream, and storm-dark cloud bands. It has no accessible solid surface. Gravity near the visible cloud tops is about 7.6 standard gravities, and pressure rises rapidly below them. Only reinforced craft working temporary corridors can reach the outermost bands used by the Deep.

Culture

The Twofold

No tradition is practiced on Oranth because no one inhabits it. The planet nevertheless creates Twofold work: Summoners reveal temporary descent corridors, Descriers read conditions ordinary instruments may register too late, and its eclipses set observances on many moons. Serath uses the unreachable, unavoidable giant as an image of the Twofold while declining to assign it to either aspect.

Travel

Travel Notes

There is no landing on Oranth. Ordinary traffic remains in moon-bound orbits; entry toward the Deep requires advance Kharadi clearance, a rated atmospheric craft, and a specialized crew. Corridors through the upper bands are temporary because storms and electrical conditions erase fixed routes. Kharad licenses Summoners for descent and requires unfamiliar vessels to carry a Descrier. A vessel without a current permit is turned back before atmospheric entry.
