Overview
The Record
Tharos turns a dense mountain moon into a training ground. Its gravity is stronger than that of most neighboring settlements, its breathable air is held at high pressure, and its fortress-cities use quarried stone as structure rather than display. Agricultural shelves occupy the ground that can feed those cities; ranges, gates, and broad drill courts occupy much of the rest.
Training governs public life as well as military service. Tharosi companies keep Menders whose judgment determines whether an injured soldier is fit to march, and an officer who ignores that judgment loses more standing than one who cancels an exercise. The same culture prizes controlled strength, shared drill, and work completed in formation.
The Tharosi orders also teach a strict reading of the Binding. Novices spend years training with the draw before receiving a sharpened weapon, on the principle that an arm powered by the body is lawful only when that body is disciplined. Their instructors are accepted on worlds that would refuse a Tharosi garrison, which extends the moon’s influence without extending its command.
Tharos supplies readiness under oath to Othryn. Its commanders retain authority over their companies and fortress-cities, while Othryn provides strategic protection, opens the wider political network of the Grasp, and speaks for their deployment beyond the moon. The arrangement gives Tharos reach but not sovereignty: its war crest is recognized, yet Othryn’s name carries the binding warrant.

Tharos is a sworn martial vassal of Othryn. Tharosi commanders govern their fortress-cities, training grounds, and companies; Othryn speaks for the relationship beyond the moon and may call those companies under the terms of the oath.
Tharos supplies disciplined forces and instructors. Othryn provides strategic protection, access to Grasp corridors, and the political standing under which Tharosi companies deploy elsewhere. Internal command remains Tharosi, but system-wide agreements carry Othryn’s authority.
The Tharosi war crest identifies the moon and its formations. It is formally recognized as a local crest, not as the seal of a sovereign power.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter5,120 km
- Mass0.105 Earth masses
- Gravity0.65 g
Tharos has a breathable atmosphere at high surface pressure. Quarry winds can carry mineral dust into the fortress-cities, heat collects in enclosed basins, and the inhabited heights are colder without offering easier breathing. Visitors from lower-pressure settlements often sleep poorly until they acclimate.

- Orbital Order62
- Orbital Radius1,020,000 km
- Orbital Period3.843 days
- Rotation92.23 hours
- Inclination0.14 degrees
- Eccentricity0.005
Tharos rotates once during each 3.843-standard-day orbit and is tidally locked to Oranth, which remains fixed above the inner face. Vya and Veo still rise and set over a longer sunrise-to-sunrise cycle, while frequent eclipses interrupt the light. Drill schedules treat daylight, stellar night, and eclipse as different training conditions rather than reasons to halt.
Oranth’s reflected glow reaches much of the inner face after the stars set. Outer-face towns lack that fixed light and maintain longer dark watches under lamps.
Culture
The Twofold
Tharosi companies keep Menders rather than Kindlers. A Mender who can return a crushed hand to service is held in higher regard than most officers, and the training grounds treat a Mender’s judgment on who is fit to march as final. Dawn practice joins restoration to controlled strength and public duty; Gloam remains present in night watches and older mountain shrines without governing the gates.
Travel
Travel Notes
Civilian vessels must use a designated yard and declare a receiving institution before descent. Military traffic, training detachments, and supply convoys take priority. Crews accustomed to lesser gravity should allow time for acclimation before surface work; high atmospheric pressure can also disrupt sleep during the first local days.
Companies called or returned under the vassal oath route through Othryni authority. A Tharosi crest identifies a formation or local warrant, but Othryn’s name outranks it at external Grasp gates. Landing permission does not grant entry to a range, fortress, or order house.
