The Deep

Mine

Kharad’s atmospheric extraction operation in Oranth’s outer bands, where pump stations, harvesting craft, and Deep-divers work temporary corridors that supply the foundries of the Grasp.

Overview

The Record

The Deep is where the industry of the Grasp reaches into Oranth itself. It is the extraction operation that works the giant’s outer accessible bands: not a moon and not a mine beneath any world’s crust, but stations, corridors, and crews held inside an atmosphere with no surface to receive them. Pump stations hold position in the upper bands and draw halcyne from the layers beneath them; crews call it ichor. Harvesting craft carry it up through Kharadi corridors, and Kharad’s foundries turn it into refined metal, feedstock, and the hulls that make the next descent possible. Space travel across the system depends on it.

Nothing about the approach is permanent. Convoys assemble at Korvan Gate, and crews and cargo transfer to atmospheric craft at Oranth’s Cup, where they take their final forecasts. A descent proceeds only through a corridor that Summoners have revealed, Rethis has not warned against, and Kharad has opened, and a route can close after it has been assigned. Deep-divers work the lower reaches, where crews endure conditions no unaccompanied person could survive; each carries an Abider. The crews are long-standing teams. Dhorak’s hiring boards weigh years of shared work as heavily as an individual record, because trust has become part of corridor readiness.

Kharad commands all of it: the stations, the temporary corridors, the permits, and the descent crews. The Directorate’s Overseer holds operational command of the descent and every corridor feeding it, and if the corridor stops answering, the office is filled again before the shift ends. Velyrian finance is built into the works. House Ilvareth’s paper paid for the descent works and the pump stations, and those obligations remain outstanding, but contractual access does not assign a crew, issue a permit, or open a descent window. The Sentinel guards the inner approaches under a compact that gives Kharad direction of every operation involving the Deep.

The operation’s power is real and narrow. It cannot calm Oranth’s weather, and radiation, magnetic storms, or a failed corridor can halt it after a window has been assigned. A Rethin forecast can delay or close a descent but never authorize one. The Faithful, Rethin apostates who hold the Deep to be a wound in the living Sky Father, are reckoned to have begun at Korvan Gate with a failure entered as maintenance and called sabotage ninety years later. Kharad prosecutes them for what they stop rather than for what they believe. Its operational law asks first whether a corridor stopped, and only afterward why.

Role and Purpose

Function

The Deep draws halcyne from Oranth’s upper bands through its pump stations and sends it up Kharadi corridors on harvesting craft to Kharad’s foundries, which turn it into refined metal, feedstock, and the hulls on which space travel across the system depends.

Authority and Civic Life

Governance

The Deep is an operation inside Oranth’s atmosphere, not territory, and the planet belongs to no one. Kharad holds operational command of the Deep, its stations, and its descent corridors. The Directorate issues or denies the permits without which the Deep cannot be worked, and the Overseer, a duty-roster office held by a director with corridor experience, commands the descent. Velyrian investors, chiefly House Ilvareth, retain contractual access under a payment schedule Kharad has never missed, without authority over crews or routing. Under the Sentinel compact Kharad directs operations involving the Deep, a clause continuously active since it was first invoked against the Faithful. The stations carry no crest; their marks identify Kharadi Deep operations.

Landscape and Conditions

Environment

The Deep works inside Oranth’s atmosphere of hydrogen, helium, volatile compounds, and metallic vapors, among electrical storms and storm-dark cloud bands. There is no surface below. Gravity near the visible cloud tops is about 7.6 standard gravities, and pressure rises rapidly beneath them, so only reinforced craft and specialized platforms can work the outer accessible bands. Nothing outside a hull is breathable. Crews live and work in sealed, reinforced compartments, and the chief hazards are pressure, storm, radiation, and magnetic weather that can blind instruments after a corridor has been opened. The Deep has no orbit of its own. Its stations ride Oranth’s upper bands as the planet turns once every 10.8 standard hours, carried through starlight and shadow on roughly that cycle, though band winds can lengthen or shorten it. The same rapid rotation drives the shifting cloud and magnetic conditions that open and close corridors. Crews keep Kharadi standard time, and the working clock is set by descent windows rather than by light.

Arrival and Transit

Travel Notes

No one visits the Deep. Entry requires advance Kharadi clearance, a rated atmospheric craft, and a specialized crew. Authorized traffic passes through Korvan Gate, where convoys and routes are assigned, and through Oranth’s Cup, where crews take final forecasts and corridor assignments before leaving for the upper bands. A cleared vessel may still wait at berth if the weather changes. Leaving the published approach or descending without Kharadi permission is treated as a major security violation, and the Sentinel guards the inner approaches. Descent Law grants no authority over these routes, and the approaches carry no Warden markings; the Deep has never been a Warden matter.

Dawn and Gloam

The Twofold

The Deep makes Kharad’s Twofold tension daily work. Summoners reveal the temporary corridors through Oranth’s storms and guide vessels when instruments fail, and Descriers read conditions ordinary instruments may register too late; Kharad will not clear a strange vessel toward the Deep without a Descrier on station. Gloam belongs to the crews who endure the lower reaches. Every Deep-diver carries an Abider, whose work does not shorten the dangerous passage or remove its conditions, only makes the interval survivable. Occulters keep sensitive corridors out of published approaches. All of them work under Kharadi license, and any practitioner able to affect a descent route is regulated as closely as the route itself.
