Mordane

The Iron Hold

Mordane’s old mining houses work the iron-rich mountains of a cold Kharadi vassal, keeping their estates in exchange for quotas, access, audits, and loyalty.

Overview

The Record

Mordane is a compact, iron-rich moon of mountains, scree, and frozen runoff. Most of its 11.8 million people live in lower basins where pressure and warmth collect, linked by covered roads to mine mouths and smelter towns. Above them, thin air, mineral dust, and cold confine work to sealed galleries, heated walls, and short exposed shifts.

The oldest mining houses own seams, foundries, docks, and the right to decide who enters a shaft. Their high works are barracks and crews rather than towns; their valley estates combine industrial management with inherited rule. Ceremony confirms a claim, and a claim is expected to name both the ore removed and the people who died removing it.

Sextons keep remembrance chambers beside the veins opened by the dead. Assayers sit with yard masters when charge counts are signed, testing the word of whoever signs rather than the count. The houses resent both functions, especially the second, because standing audit is one of the terms that followed the Shortfall.

During that dispute, Kharad rejected Mordane cargo after excavation records failed to account for charge draw, and the rest of the Grasp followed. Two years of full holds and empty berths ended in settlement: the estates retained local extraction rights, while accepting quotas, military access, audits, and Kharadi representation. Mordane still maintains that nothing was built from the missing stock.

Mordane supplies iron, dense minerals, crews, and private industrial capacity to Kharad’s foundries and Deep-support works. The Deep is not on Mordane; it lies within Oranth’s atmosphere and is reached through Kharadi corridors. Mordane possesses leverage as a supplier, but its cargo moves through a political order that has already demonstrated it can refuse the shipment.

Kharad

Mordane is a vassal realm of Kharad under the Terms of Cairn Voss, the settlement that ended the Shortfall about two centuries ago. Its mining aristocracy retains estates, docks, and extraction rights in exchange for mineral quotas, military access, standing audit of charge inventories, and loyalty.

Kharad represents Mordane in system-wide industrial and Deep matters. The Deep lies within Oranth’s atmosphere, not on Mordane; the moon supplies iron, dense minerals, and crews to the works that support it.

Mining houses use local dynastic crests. Those marks govern estates but do not outrank Kharad’s warrant at a Grasp checkpoint.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter3,560 km
  • Mass0.026 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.33 g

Mordane has a cold, thin atmosphere breathable without aid only in the deeper basins and settlements that retain pressure and heat. Ridges and high cuts require protective equipment. Blasting and collapse leave mineral dust suspended in still valley air, so mines and covered roads depend on filtration, weather reports, and closures after major excavation work.

  • Orbital Radius710,000 km
  • Orbital Period2.232 days
  • Rotation53.57 hours
  • Inclination0.11 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.004

Mordane is tidally locked to Oranth, rotating once during each 2.232-standard-day orbit. Oranth remains fixed over the inner face, while Vya and Veo still rise and set on a cycle close to the orbital period. Frequent eclipses interrupt that light and may coincide with Oranthian magnetic weather that affects communications. Mines schedule exposed work around eclipse, cold, and radiation rather than around a civil day.

Culture

The Twofold

Sextons keep the remembrance chambers where the dead are named beside the veins they opened. Assayers read dangerous flaws and witness the charge counts imposed after the Shortfall, a Dawn role the houses accept and resent in equal measure. Here Gloam preserves obligation; Dawn makes the ledger visible.

Travel

Travel Notes

  1. Use a basin port controlled by the estate named on the clearance. Open-highland landings and unauthorized surveys of working cuts are treated as trespass or theft. Radiation and magnetic weather can delay approach, and passenger berths are scarce.

  2. Private docks are audited on a published schedule. Charge inventories are reconciled against excavation returns before a hold is sealed, and a Kharadi warrant outranks a Mordane crest at inner checkpoints. Cargo may move to Kharad or Othryn without granting its vessel clearance for the Deep.
