Cindrel

The Tube Cities

A network of sealed tunnel settlements mining refractory minerals beneath the surface of an active volcanic moon.

Overview

The Record

Cindrel is an active volcanic moon whose settlements occupy cooled lava tunnels beneath the surface. Its mines extract refractory minerals, materials capable of retaining their strength under extreme heat, for use in furnace linings, engine shielding, foundry equipment, and other high-temperature works.

The moon has a thin, toxic atmosphere composed largely of sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and volcanic aerosols. Surface conditions can change rapidly as vents open, ash spreads, and heat rises through newly active ground. Every settlement is sealed within an older lava tube and protected by redundant thermal barriers, pressure gates, and air-processing systems. A tunnel considered safe one generation may be abandoned in the next if the surrounding rock begins to warm.

Cindrel is a collection of self-governing tunnel holds under Othryn’s protection. Each hold manages its own housing, mines, labor rules, and internal disputes. Othryni wardens secure the orbital approaches, regulate expansion into unstable regions, and enforce extraction limits intended to keep the holds from undermining one another. External warrants are issued in Othryn’s name. Cindrel has no common crest; households, mines, and tunnel holds use their own signs instead.

No crew opens a new excavation face without someone trained to read hot stone. The licensed trades capable of identifying hidden heat, pressure, and weakness are associated with Dawn, since their work reveals dangers concealed within the rock. Gloam is found in the endurance of the tunnel crews and in the guarded knowledge each hold keeps from its rivals. Othryn respects the first and watches the second carefully, as Cindreli mines have been known to conceal both unexpected yields and unacceptable risks.

When a newly cooled chamber is opened, the crews observe an old sequence of lights, measured silence, and spoken responses before the first machinery enters. Outsiders often call it a religious rite. Cindreli miners insist it is a safety inspection whose wording has merely survived longer than anyone remembers.

Landing requires a heat-rated vessel and an extraction or transit permit issued through Othryn. Surface stays are kept brief, and most authorized craft descend directly into shielded tunnel ports. Travelers without business in the mines rarely remain once their inspection or delivery is complete.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter1,650 km
  • Mass0.0014964 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.09 g

Cindrel has a thin, toxic atmosphere composed largely of sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and volcanic aerosols. Its settlements are sealed within cooled lava tubes and protected by redundant pressure gates, thermal barriers, and air-processing systems. Conditions outside can change quickly when new vents open or heat returns to previously stable ground.

  • Orbital Order56
  • Orbital Radius930,000 km
  • Orbital Period3.347 days
  • Rotation80.33 hours
  • Inclination0.13 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.006

Cindrel is tidally locked to Oranth. Its rapid orbit creates a short cycle of daylight and frequent eclipses, though neither matters greatly within the tunnels. More important is the changing tidal stress caused by the moon’s slightly uneven orbit, which flexes the crust and can reopen vents or destabilize old lava tubes. Every mine builds those stress forecasts into its work schedule.

Culture

The Twofold

Summoners identify stable routes through heated rock, while Descriers recognize changes in pressure, temperature, and fracture before the instruments confirm them. Both practices are associated with Dawn, and both command unusually high fees on Cindrel because a correct reading may preserve an entire tunnel hold.

Gloam is found in what the crews endure and in what the mines choose not to record. The first is honored openly as resilience. The second includes concealed hazards, understated yields, and discoveries kept from rival holds or Othryni inspectors. Cindrel would rarely admit it, but many of its mines consider that silence the more valuable skill.

Travel

Travel Notes

Landing on Cindrel requires a heat-rated vessel and an Othryni extraction or transit permit. Surface exposure is kept to a minimum, and authorized craft descend directly into shielded ports built within the mouths of stable lava tubes. Travelers are transferred underground as soon as pressure and thermal checks are complete.
