Dawn — reveals
Descrier
What was put out of sight
A rare Dawn practitioner who makes out deliberate concealment and provides the only reliable counter to an Eclipser working at scale.
rareRarity, not rank. A practitioner is one thing for life.
A Descrier makes out something distant or deliberately concealed. The work can disclose a vessel hidden from observation, a column crossing ground that appears empty, or cargo omitted from a manifest. It is directed at concealment rather than falsehood: an Assayer tests a person’s word, while a Descrier examines what the word or record leaves out.
The classification exists because the Eclipser does. Descriers are the only reliable counter to concealment at scale, and their rarity affects convoy insurance, border agreements, and the terms under which an unfamiliar fleet may approach an orbital yard. Kharad will not clear a strange vessel toward the Deep without one on station. The practitioner identifies the concealed condition; Kharadi authority decides whether the vessel proceeds.
The Binding supplies the most regular demand. Its inspectors reconcile ledgers and inventories, while retained Descriers examine holds the declared figures do not cover. The treaty does not require a moon to admit a Descrier, and the practitioner does not issue the legal judgment. Refusing an inspection accompanied by one is nevertheless treated by the signatories as an answer, because concealment becomes much harder to dismiss as an accounting error once a Descrier is present.
Whether the practitioner perceives concealment directly or notices signs that a careful observer would eventually recognize remains disputed. Rethis does not settle the mechanism. Its observatories train Descriers beside ordinary watchkeepers and treat both kinds of observation as one discipline, even when only the practitioner can provide the warning in time.
The industrial work is quieter and pays worse. A flaw inside a billet or an uncut stone was hidden by nobody, which puts it outside what the Velyrian schools mean by concealment, and the schools have never entirely approved of the yards on that account. The yards hire anyway. A Descrier who can find a vessel under an Eclipser can certainly find a void in a casting, and the moons that cut lenses or lay keels would rather pay the rate than launch the consequences.
