Overview
The Record
Koravel is a cold continental moon whose roads, campaigns, and harvests all answer to winter. Fortified holds command mountain passes and frozen bays, while broad plains and inland seas disappear under seasonal ice. The brief thaw opens agricultural valleys and movement corridors; the freeze closes them again, often with ships and travelers still on the wrong side.
No court governs the whole moon. Each fortified principality keeps its own territory, armed traditions, ports, and external bargains. Once each year their representatives meet at the Oath Basin under the Compact and swear only what they are willing to undertake. A principality that does not swear is not bound. A promise that is sworn does not expire, and the Basin’s custodians maintain the one register no court may revise for convenience.
That structure makes cooperation narrow but durable. Principalities combine for trade, dynastic interest, outside threat, and access to routes, then resume their rivalries when the common purpose ends. Valdyr remains Koravel’s industrial protectorate and mutual-defense partner, retaining local administration while Koravel supplies external security and long supply. Edrane coordinates most convoys across the Shatter, a service Koravel depends upon without accepting Edrani authority.
The Twofold follows the same divisions. Dawn belongs to public oaths, collective defense, rebuilding, and the warmer season; Gloam to scouts, winter travelers, archives, and communities cut off by snow. Summoners find passes and safe lines through storms. Eclipsers are retained openly by some principalities and punished by others, even when both sit in the same defensive alliance.
Koravel builds walls, fortified ports, and crew-powered engines intended to defeat such defenses. It can make agreements that outlive their makers, but it cannot make one court speak for another. That refusal limits its reach and preserves its sovereignty: outsiders must negotiate with the principality in front of them, not with an imagined Koravelan state.
Koravel builds the walls the rest of the system measures itself against, and the engines meant to bring them down. Its yards turn out cranked and counterweighted machines that no arm could draw alone, which the Koravelan position holds to be lawful on the grounds that every measure of the power is put in by the crews who wind them. Rhovan disputes this in principle and buys the smaller models regardless. The argument has never been submitted to anyone, because there is nobody to submit it to, and both moons have learned to find that satisfactory.
Political Relationships
Standing
Standing at a Glance
- Political Status
- Sovereign
- Civilization Status
- Major Civilization
- Heraldic Standing
- Sovereign Seal
Koravel is sovereign but not politically unified. Each fortified principality governs its own territory, ports, forces, and warrants. The Compact at the Oath Basin binds only courts that swear to a measure, and every accepted obligation remains in force until fulfilled; no assembly or principality may speak for the moon as a whole.
Valdyr is Koravel’s industrial protectorate and mutual-defense partner. Its rift towns retain local administration, while Koravel provides external security and long supply in return for access to Valdyr’s geothermal industry. Edrane coordinates most crossings of the Shatter but gains no authority over Koravel by doing so.
Each principality uses its own seal and external agreements. Koravel’s sovereign standing does not grant any one court authority to represent another.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter8,100 km
- Mass0.31 Earth masses
- Gravity0.77 g
Koravel has a cold, dry, breathable atmosphere at pressure moderately below the inhabited-world norm, thin enough that arrivals from the Embrace notice it on their first climb. Continents, frozen inland seas, windswept plains, mountain chains, and seasonal ice dominate the surface. Long winters isolate settlements for weeks; the brief warmer season uncovers the grassland, forest, and agricultural valleys on which the moon depends. Buildings, stores, and roads are therefore designed for isolation rather than emergency improvisation.
Orbit and Time
Path Around Oranth
- Orbital Order760
- Orbital Radius12,800,000 km
- Orbital Period170.826 days
- Rotation38.4 hours
- Inclination171.2 degrees
- Eccentricity0.019
Koravel rotates once every 38.4 standard hours and is not tidally locked. Its distant retrograde orbit around Oranth takes 170.826 standard days, so Oranth rises and sets rather than remaining fixed and the prograde inner moons cross the sky in an unfamiliar direction. Seasonal thaw and freeze govern planting, campaigns, and the winter-road obligations that principalities honor even while feuding. Eclipses are irregular and carry little practical weight.
Culture
The Twofold
Koravel’s principalities keep both aspects and agree on almost nothing about either. Dawn governs public oaths, collective defense, rebuilding, and the return of the warmer season. Gloam belongs to scouts, winter travelers, archivists, and communities cut off by months of darkness and snow. Summoners reveal mountain passes, forgotten roads, and safe lines through storms; their reception depends entirely on the court whose ground they cross.
Eclipsers are the sharper question. Two or three working in concert can bring a column through a pass unobserved, which in a winter campaign tends to decide the thing outright, and Koravel has never produced a common position on it. Some principalities retain Eclipsers openly and name them in the order of battle. Others treat employing one as grounds for execution and have acted on it within living memory. Both kinds sit in the same defensive alliances, and neither raises the subject.
Travel
Travel Notes
Each major port belongs to a principality and sits behind its own orbital and surface defenses. Koravel issues no moon-wide clearance: travelers crossing a border may need fresh permission, and favor at one court can count against them at the next. Winter roads, mountain passes, and frozen-water corridors close for days or weeks in storms. Most arrivals from the Embrace cross the Shatter in an Edrane-coordinated convoy, then transfer to local authority for the outward leg; Summoners employed for the crossing are usually paid off at Edrane.
