Overview
The Record
Vaul permits observation without access. Surface openings in the irregular moon descend only as far as sealed barriers and dormant machinery, some of which predates every securely dated Oranthian civilization.
No expedition has reached the central interior. Earlier attempts to cut or force the principal seals were abandoned when machinery responded unpredictably and researchers could not determine whether the barriers were intended to contain something, protect it, or serve another purpose entirely.
The outer rock turns through long light and darkness, but exposed machinery changes temperature far less than expected. Instruments also indicate deeper sealed volumes without revealing their pressure or contents. Neither observation explains who built Vaul, how old the complete structure is, or what work it once performed.
An orbital watch maintains the exclusion zone under agreements that grant no power ownership of the moon. Gloam traditions treat the intact seals as a lesson in restraint, but no evidence connects the machinery to the Twofold. Claims that Vaul is a weapon, prison, vessel, archive, or Twofold structure remain speculation, not findings.
Political Relationships
Standing
Standing at a Glance
- Civilization Status
- Uninhabited
- Heraldic Standing
- No Unified Mark
Vaul is unclaimed and enclosed by a recognized exclusion zone. Several outer powers honor the restriction and contribute to orbital observation, but none holds acknowledged ownership or territorial authority over the moon. The watch may enforce distance without converting that duty into a claim.
Unknown symbols appear on sealed structures. None is treated as a crest or translated with enough confidence to support a political identity.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter690 km
- Mass0.000045679 Earth masses
- Gravity0.03 g
Vaul is airless, and every accessible internal approach remains in vacuum. Instruments indicate sealed volumes farther inside, but their pressure, contents, and habitability cannot be characterized without breaching barriers that the exclusion rules forbid disturbing.
Orbit and Time
Path Around Oranth
- Orbital Order860
- Orbital Radius16,400,000 km
- Orbital Period247.745 days
- Rotation88.6 hours
- Inclination143.5 degrees
- Eccentricity0.049
Vaul rotates every 88.6 standard hours during a retrograde 247.745-standard-day orbit. Exposed rock follows the long light and dark phases, while surface machinery changes temperature far less than expected. No accepted explanation accounts for that difference.
Culture
The Twofold
Gloam traditions associate Vaul with sealed knowledge, restraint, and deliberate withholding. That interpretation supports the caution surrounding the moon but does not explain it: no accepted evidence shows that the machinery uses, responds to, or was created through the Twofold.
Travel
Travel Notes
Remain at the approved orbital observation distance and follow watch instructions. Landing, drilling, cutting a seal, entering a surface opening, transmitting activation commands, or attempting to power machinery is prohibited. Research authorization permits observation only.
