Ghostlight

Lights beneath the frozen dark

An icy moon where pale lights move beneath the frozen surface, though no settlement, machinery, or source for them has ever been confirmed.

Overview

The Record

Ghostlight is an icy moon named for the pale lights that move beneath its frozen surface. They cross dark regions of the ice, alter course, divide into smaller lights, and vanish only to reappear elsewhere. Some movements seem deliberate when observed alone. None has repeated often enough to become predictable.

Surveys have confirmed buried pockets of liquid, deep fractures, and broad discontinuities within the ice. They have found no city, transit network, or inhabited structure beneath it. Thermal, magnetic, and electrical instruments have likewise failed to identify an energy source that consistently follows the lights.

Every serious explanation remains open. The phenomenon may arise from organisms within the buried water, pressure and mineral activity in the ice, unknown machinery, or light carried through the moon’s fractured interior from another source. Each theory explains some observations and fails against others. Ghostlight is named for what can plainly be seen, not for anything anyone has yet proved lies below.

No Unified Mark

Ghostlight remains unclaimed. Varosi and Edrani institutions conduct occasional surveys, but neither their presence nor their research stations confer sovereignty over the moon.

Each expedition carries the mark of its sponsoring institution. Ghostlight itself has no crest and speaks in no power’s name.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter860 km
  • Mass0.000083639 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.02 g

Ghostlight has no substantial atmosphere, only a trace exosphere of nitrogen and water vapor above its frozen surface. Fractures occasionally release denser plumes of vapor and ice grains, but these freeze, fall back, or disperse into space before they can form any lasting cover.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order838
  • Orbital Radius15,380,000 km
  • Orbital Period224.996 days
  • Rotation41.3 hours
  • Inclination169.2 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.029

Ghostlight rotates once every 41.3 standard hours while following a retrograde orbit around Oranth. The buried lights are most easily observed during the moon’s long night, when they show clearly through the darkened ice. Instruments have also detected them beneath the daylight surface, however, ruling out any simple explanation based solely on reflected light from Vya, Veo, or Oranth.

Culture

The Twofold

Ghostlight has become a symbol of hidden life and of movement continuing beneath apparent stillness. Gloam traditions claim an obvious kinship with what remains concealed under the ice, while Dawn readings emphasize the light by which that hidden motion becomes known. Neither interpretation establishes that the phenomenon itself arises from the Twofold.

Travel

Travel Notes

Orbital observation of Ghostlight is permitted, but any surface expedition must carry cold-rated equipment and enough fuel and repair capacity to recover itself without assistance. Drilling is forbidden wherever the lights are active or have recently been observed, both to protect the phenomenon from contamination and to avoid opening an environment whose nature remains unknown.
