Greenwake

The green fire of the outer dark

An icy body that releases a luminous green wake as its eccentric orbit carries it through the tidal and magnetic influence of Oranth.

Overview

The Record

Greenwake is a small captured cometary body on a highly eccentric orbit around Oranth. For most of that orbit it travels beyond the regularly used lanes of the Far Reach, cold, dark, and nearly indistinguishable from the surrounding debris.

Its return toward Oranth changes it. Increasing tidal stress opens fractures in the frozen surface and releases trapped gas and dust. Sunlight and charged particles within Oranth’s magnetic field excite that material into a broad green radiance, leaving a luminous wake visible across much of the outer system. The wake marks Greenwake’s approach long before the body itself can be resolved.

The glow is a natural consequence of vented material, though its precise composition has never been comprehensively sampled. No settlement, artificial structure, or controlled transmission has been detected. Greenwake is understood well enough to predict its return and poorly enough that every return still draws observers.

No Unified Mark

Greenwake is unclaimed and treated as a tracked natural body rather than territory subject to administration. No power maintains a permanent presence upon it or asserts authority over its orbit.

It has no crest or institutional mark. Symbols used for Greenwake belong to the observatories and survey authorities recording its passage, not to the body itself.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter36 km
  • Mass0.00000000056 Earth masses
  • Gravity0 g

Greenwake has no permanent atmosphere. Near periapsis, tidal fractures release water vapor, dust, and carbon-bearing gases, including compounds that produce short-lived diatomic carbon when exposed to radiation. Sunlight and charged particles excite this material into a temporary coma, while Oranth’s magnetic field draws the ionized portion into the body’s distinctive green wake.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order900
  • Orbital Radius32,000,000 km
  • Orbital Period675.25 days
  • Rotation21.6 hours
  • Inclination83.7 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.62

Greenwake’s listed orbital radius of 32,000,000 kilometers is its semimajor axis, not its distance from Oranth at any given time. Its highly eccentric path carries it inward to approximately 12,160,000 kilometers at periapsis and outward to approximately 51,840,000 kilometers at apoapsis.

The body rotates once every 21.6 standard hours. Near Oranth, active fractures repeatedly turn into and out of direct starlight and the strongest charged-particle flows, producing jets that rise, weaken, and return with the rotation. Their timing is regular enough to forecast, though the strength of each eruption is not.

Culture

The Twofold

Greenwake is widely associated with Dawn because each return transforms an almost invisible body into one of the brightest signs in the outer sky. Its passage is invoked in teachings about revelation, renewal, and the moment when what was hidden becomes impossible to ignore. The glow itself is well explained by released gas, dust, and charged particles; no evidence has established it as a manifestation of the Twofold.

Travel

Travel Notes

Close approach is hazardous during Greenwake’s active phase. Unpredictable jets can alter the body’s immediate environment without warning, while dust, ice fragments, and charged particles threaten hulls, sensors, and communications. Most surveys are therefore conducted remotely or from observation positions kept well outside the luminous wake.
