Overview
The Record
Kethran Hold controls the place where several winter roads meet a defensible mountain pass. Successive walls climb a dark escarpment above a snowbound valley. Markets, housing, foundries, and convoy yards occupy the lower wards; the court, military command, archives, and workshops for Koravel’s great counterweighted engines stand on the upper terraces.
Cold determines how the fortress works. Enclosed bridges, deep gates, heated courts, steep-roofed districts, and covered passages allow movement when the open road is technically passable but lethal to anyone using it. The walls can shelter traffic driven from the plains, while road authorities and Summoners recover routes buried by storm and drift.
Kethran’s engines are crew-wound machines built on the Koravelan claim that every measure of force is supplied by the people who crank and counterweight them. Their manufacture gives the Hold unusual military influence in defensive alliances. Its openly retained Eclipsers add another advantage that allied principalities prefer not to discuss, even when their own laws condemn the practice.
None of that makes Kethran Koravel’s capital. Its court governs the principality, its roads, and whatever territory its soldiers can defend or its diplomats persuade. Neighboring courts accept neither Kethran’s decrees nor its entry papers. The Hold’s importance rests on walls, engines, roads, and shelter, not on a moon-wide authority Koravel has never created.

Successive walls climb a dark stone escarpment above a snowbound valley. Lower wards hold markets, housing, foundries, and convoy yards; upper terraces contain the court, command, archives, and engine workshops. Enclosed bridges, deep gates, heated courts, steep roofs, and covered passages protect movement through thin air, severe cold, and storms that can isolate the pass for weeks.

Travel Notes
Approach by one of the maintained winter roads and carry Kethran’s own entry papers. Snow, military closures, and changing road conditions can halt traffic quickly, while the upper pass commonly closes during the hardest winter. Permission from Kethran ends at its defended territory and has no force in a neighboring principality.
