Overview
The Record
Ysil makes privacy a civic system. Cool mist fills its low wooded hills and settled cuts, hiding paths, landing slopes, and holds that were placed out of sight before Occulters added any further concealment.
Each hold maintains its own food, water, atmospheric works, paths, and terms of reception. There is no public harbor and no common government that can order one community to receive a visitor admitted by another. Fungi, dyes, and quiet lodging reach outside trade in small quantities, but wider commerce would require the maps and access Ysil exists to withhold.
Gloam practice supports that arrangement. Occulters keep holdings off charts and families out of registers, while local custom decides who has earned knowledge of a route or name. Concealment is treated as stewardship rather than spectacle, and a practitioner hired to hide something is expected to conceal the hiring as well.
Varos is Ysil’s nominal protector, providing occasional trade access, external representation, and protection when a hold asks for it. No Varosi governor administers the moon, and the holds share no sovereign mark. Ysil can deny outsiders a clear view of local life; it cannot avoid dependence on maintained air systems, rare trade, and the protection it sometimes requests.

Ysil is a nominal protectorate of Varos. Its holds govern themselves, control local access, and maintain their own life-support works. No common Ysilian government can bind every hold, and no Varosi governor administers them.
Varos provides occasional trade access, represents Ysil externally when requested, and extends protection when a hold asks for it. Those services do not grant Varos routine authority over local records, routes, landings, or disputes. A Varosi introduction identifies an external relationship but does not compel a hold to open its door.
Ysil has no sovereign crest or unified political mark. Individual communities use local identifiers, while acts undertaken through Varos carry the appropriate Varosi authority rather than a fictive Ysilian seal.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky

Ysil’s settled cuts hold cool, damp, breathable air sustained by living cover and maintained circulation and replenishment works. Persistent mist is ordinary weather and evidence that moisture remains in the local cycle. The small moon cannot retain habitable conditions without assistance; a major systems failure would force evacuation of a hold before food shortage became the immediate danger.

Ysil rotates every 41.2 standard hours and is not tidally locked. It follows a retrograde 212.389-standard-day orbit in the Far Reach, so Oranth rises and sets as a comparatively small light. Long mornings and evenings disappear into persistent mist, while covered nights are nearly complete. Holds keep local clocks; visiting ships require current outer charts for the moon’s retrograde approach.
Culture
The Twofold
Ysil employs Occulters to keep holdings off charts, families out of registers, and routes from observers who have not earned trust. The fee is understood to conceal the hiring as well as its subject. Dawn practice is rare and practical: a Kindler is asked for heat or light, not public revelation. Neither practice grants a visitor access that a hold has refused.
Travel
Travel Notes
Arrive only with a current Far Reach solution and a receiving hold’s invitation. Ysil has no public orbital market, and a landing slope may remain dark until local guidance answers. Hold at the edge, limit active scanning, and wait for an assigned descent path.
A Varosi introduction may establish who sent you; it does not compel reception. Bring independent reserves, because permission to land at one hold does not include resupply, access to another hold, or a map of the surface routes.
