Dawn — reveals
Summoner
The way revealed, or opened
A Dawn practitioner who reveals an existing way or opens a new one, with the second work carrying the greater risk.
uncommonRarity, not rank. A practitioner is one thing for life.
A Summoner reveals a way or opens one. Revealing identifies a passage that already exists: a descent through Oranth’s storms, a Koravelan mountain road obscured by the season, or a channel left through Varos after floodwater rewrites the delta. Opening attempts to create passage where none was available. The catalogue places both acts under one name, but crews and insurers price them as different work.
Revealing is the safer half. Opening can strand a vessel among debris or deliver it toward Edrane too quickly to recover, and losses in the Shatter preserve the distinction more clearly than doctrine does. A Summoner may present a viable route, but that perception does not authorize departure. Kharad still licenses the practitioner and opens a Deep corridor; Edrani authorities still clear the vessel, convoy, and crossing.
Intermoon travel remains sub-light, and the Shatter can defeat ordinary instruments, so Summoners provide an operational service rather than a ceremonial one. Kharad depends on them for descent into the Deep. Edrane will not release a convoy from Ravelin without one under contract, even while its Gloam establishment employs Occulters to keep other approaches concealed. The two practices answer opposite needs, and neither removes the state’s authority over passage.
