Renna

The Under-Ice

A Varosi-protected ocean moon whose under-ice habitats raise fish, algae, oils, and medicines for settlements across the Far Reach.

Overview

The Record

Renna feeds parts of the Far Reach from a warm ocean hidden beneath its frozen shell. Its fisheries and cultivation chambers supply fish, algae, oils, and cold-water medicines to Varos and to outer settlements that cannot produce them reliably.

The moon’s 880,000 inhabitants live in pressurized habitats suspended beneath the ice. Air, water, food production, and waste control share the same managed environment, so contamination in a cultivation basin can become a settlement hazard rather than merely a lost harvest. Heated polar ports connect the ocean works to orbital freight.

Under-ice councils govern habitats, harvest quotas, and access to the fisheries. Varos protects the supply lanes, represents the protectorate externally, and receives guaranteed shares without owning the fisheries themselves. Separate habitat marks identify local councils; Varos’s name carries authority in protection and major external trade.

Cellarers preserve nearly everything Renna sells, from seed cultures to processed harvests. Quickeners serve the growing stock, and their place in harvest departures is customary even among crews unwilling to claim that it changes a yield. Renna’s ocean gives it valuable production, but the moon remains dependent on clean closed systems and on Varosi routes through which that production reaches its markets.

Varos

Renna is a Varosi protectorate and food-trade partner. Under-ice councils govern habitats, harvest quotas, cultivation systems, and local access. Varos protects the supply lanes, represents Renna externally, and receives guaranteed shares of production without owning the fisheries. Habitat councils use separate current and fish marks; Renna has no unified crest, and Varos’s name covers protection and major external trade.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter1,720 km
  • Mass0.0008475 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.05 g

Renna’s frozen surface has only a trace atmosphere of nitrogen and water vapor and cannot support unprotected life. Its 880,000 inhabitants occupy pressurized habitats beneath the ice above a warm subsurface ocean. Air and water systems are tightly integrated, making pressure loss and biological contamination connected hazards.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order835
  • Orbital Radius15,250,000 km
  • Orbital Period222.257 days
  • Rotation44.2 hours
  • Inclination170.9 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.035

Renna rotates every 44.2 standard hours while following a retrograde orbit around Oranth. Under-ice habitats use artificial day cycles independent of that rotation. Exterior light and darkness matter chiefly to surface communications, heat management, and the scheduling of work at the polar ports.

Culture

The Twofold

Cellarers preserve nearly everything Renna sells, including seed cultures, medicines, oils, and processed harvests; they are the most numerous practitioners after the divers themselves. Quickeners work with growing stock and attend harvest departures. Crews keep the custom without claiming that a blessing can replace controlled water, healthy cultures, or a clean system.

Travel

Travel Notes

Approach Renna by the Varosi supply lanes and dock at an assigned heated polar ice port. Transfer below the shell requires a local pilot; independent descents are not accepted. Crews and cargo pass biological controls before entering a habitat, and suspected contamination is isolated even when that delays an outbound harvest.
