Overview
The Record
Varos moves by river. Immense waterways cross jungle, flooded forest, wetland, and tropical coast, carrying settlements and trade through country where a permanent road would be rebuilt after every flood. Elevated deltas and managed clearings hold most towns; seasonal channels connect them.
The biosphere supplies food, medicines, fibers, and biological materials that colder Far Reach worlds cannot reproduce. Communities manage flood stages, native life, and harvest routes locally, then move or raise structures when a river changes course. Varos remains indispensable because its abundance is living and cannot be replaced by another refinery or mine.
Each river community sends an Elder to Luravai only when a common matter requires it. The Elders answer to a Chief, but outsiders are not told how that Chief is chosen. There is no central civil service directing the waterways; ordinary government remains with the communities, and the capital disperses when its work is done.
That decentralized sovereignty extends unevenly beyond Varos. Ysil is a nominal protectorate whose hidden holds accept occasional representation without Varosi administration. Edrane coordinates much of the traffic reaching Varos through the Shatter, but the Elders retain authority over their ports and rarely occupy the Standing Council chair kept for them.
Varos can sustain the Far Reach without commanding it. Its river knowledge, biological wealth, and exports give other moons reasons to accommodate the Elders, while floods, distance, and local government prevent that dependence from becoming a centralized Varosi sphere.
Political Relationships
Standing
Standing at a Glance
- Political Status
- Sovereign
- Civilization Status
- Major Civilization
- Heraldic Standing
- Sovereign Seal
Varos is a sovereign Major Moon governed through the Elders of its river communities. The Elders meet at Luravai under a Chief when a common matter requires it; local communities retain ordinary authority, and no foreign court has been told how a Chief is chosen.
Ysil is a nominal protectorate. Varos may provide trade access or external representation when requested, but it does not administer the hidden holds or treat the mist as Varosi territory.
Edrane coordinates much of the traffic crossing the Shatter and entering retrograde Far Reach routes. Varos accepts that service without yielding authority over its ports or exports. Its sovereign seal belongs to the Elders’ common acts; the Standing Council chair reserved for Varos is usually empty.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter8,700 km
- Mass0.36 Earth masses
- Gravity0.77 g
Varos has a warm, dense, breathable atmosphere with persistent humidity and cloud. Frequent rain feeds immense rivers, wetlands, flooded forests, and tropical seas. Seasonal floods redraw waterways across whole regions, while pollen, spores, and airborne biological material make respiratory screening and protective medication routine for outsiders.
Orbit and Time
Path Around Oranth
- Orbital Order800
- Orbital Radius13,800,000 km
- Orbital Period191.231 days
- Rotation26.8 hours
- Inclination162.8 degrees
- Eccentricity0.034
Varos rotates every 26.8 standard hours and is not tidally locked. It follows a retrograde 191.231-standard-day orbit in the Far Reach, so Oranth rises and sets and appears smaller than it does from inner moons. Daily light is familiar; the working calendar is not. Communities track flood stages, rainfall, and biological cycles shaped by atmospheric circulation and the changing alignment of Vya and Veo.
Culture
The Twofold
Gloam practice on Varos concerns concealed routes, changing waterways, and memory preserved in living systems. Summoners reopen passages through close forest or find navigable channels after floods move them. Dawn practice supports agriculture, medicine, and rebuilding after storm seasons. Neither aspect replaces a local pilot or a community’s knowledge of its river.
Travel
Travel Notes
Enter through a recognized orbital port and complete biological screening before descent. Surface travel is primarily by boat, elevated port, and seasonal channel; maintained overland routes may disappear after a flood. Hire a Varosi pilot for movement beyond a receiving community, because channels, wildlife, and navigable ground change faster than imported maps. Travelers from the Embrace must cross the Shatter and complete the Far Reach retrograde transition before continuing to Varos.
