Helion

The Water Hold

Helion mines and stores the water, oxygen, and reaction mass that sustain Far Reach settlements and convoys.

Overview

The Record

Helion is the Far Reach’s water hold, an icy resource moon cut for water, oxygen, and reaction mass. Its output supplies settlements and convoys operating far beyond the system’s easier reserves. What Helion exports is common matter made indispensable by distance.

The moon’s 340,000 residents live in heated caverns within the ice, supported by closed-loop air systems and extensive melt reservoirs. Iceworker cooperatives manage the cuts, the stored water, and daily habitat life. Their work turns a frozen body into a dependable supply point without making its surface hospitable.

Helion is a chartered resource dependency of Edrane. The cooperatives control extraction and the life below the ice; Edrane sets quotas and convoy schedules, controls the protected export depots, and issues external cargo warrants in its own name. A full reservoir may be Helion’s work, but it does not leave until Edrane assigns the lift.

Keeping shapes Helion’s culture as thoroughly as extraction shapes its work. Water is measured not only by what is cut, but by what survives storage and reaches a waiting convoy. The cooperative assay mark carries authority within that work, though it is an institutional emblem rather than a sovereign crest.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter1,580 km
  • Mass0.0005878 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.04 g

Helion’s exterior is a near-vacuum. Trace water vapor and oxygen released around active cuts do not form a permanent or breathable atmosphere. Its 340,000 residents live in heated caverns within the ice, where closed-loop air systems and extensive melt reservoirs support habitation; anyone working outside requires pressure protection as well as equipment suited to the severe cold.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order750
  • Orbital Radius12,550,000 km
  • Orbital Period165.927 days
  • Rotation36.4 hours
  • Inclination166.8 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.031

Helion follows a retrograde orbit around Oranth at an average radius of 12,550,000 kilometers, completing one circuit every 165.927 standard days. The moon completes one rotation every 36.4 standard hours. Weak starlight at the Far Reach and the high reflectivity of the ice keep the surface cold through both the lit and dark portions of that cycle, so extraction schedules follow convoy demand and safety conditions rather than warmth.

Culture

The Twofold

Cellarers keep Helion’s melt reservoirs and filled tanks, preserving water rather than food in what the trade regards as a promotion. Dawn marks the contrary movement: thaw, the completion of a convoy’s load, and departure. Gloam keeps the supply intact; Dawn releases it to the settlements and ships that need it.

Travel

Travel Notes

Industrial traffic is regular by Far Reach standards but operates on Edrani convoy schedules. External cargo requires a warrant issued in Edrane’s name, and arrivals use the protected export depots. Beyond the heated caverns, visitors need pressure and cryogenic protection. Active cutting fields are restricted work zones and must be kept clear.
