Deepwell

Industrial or Resource · Icy Moon

An icy moon containing an immense water reserve beneath nearly thirty kilometers of frozen crust.

Overview

The Record

Deepwell holds an immense reserve of water beneath about thirty kilometers of ice. The reserve is valued against future shortage rather than present output, because reaching it would require drilling, heat, and infrastructure on a scale no claimant has built. Helion’s surface ice can be harvested directly; Deepwell remains a strategic promise buried far beyond ordinary extraction.

No permanent population lives there. Up to 600 survey personnel occupy temporary sealed modules, maintain instruments, and measure what the crust and buried reservoir may permit. Their work studies access without beginning production, and every instrument, power system, and shelter must be supported across a surface that offers no established settlement.

Koravel and Edrane preserve competing claims, but neither controls Deepwell or extracts water at meaningful scale. The dispute remains dormant because the reserve is costly to reach and not yet urgently needed. Survey presence does not settle ownership, and neither claim grants practical command over an industry that does not exist.

Koravel and Edrane maintain competing claims to Deepwell’s buried reserve. Neither has established permanent control or undertaken extraction at meaningful scale, leaving the dispute largely dormant. Both nevertheless preserve their claims, knowing that a future water shortage could transform the inaccessible moon into one of the Far Reach’s most valuable holdings.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter480 km
  • Mass0.000005317 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.01 g

Deepwell has only a trace exterior atmosphere. Its surface is formed from a thick crust of water ice and frozen salts, beneath which surveys indicate an immense liquid or semi-liquid reservoir. The depth and pressure make direct access extremely difficult, and no permanent settlement has yet been established.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order770
  • Orbital Radius13,050,000 km
  • Orbital Period175.855 days
  • Rotation31.8 hours
  • Inclination167.5 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.028

Deepwell follows a retrograde orbit around Oranth and completes one rotation every 31.8 hours. At its distance, the light of Vya and Veo is weak and Oranth appears small in the sky. These cycles matter chiefly to survey navigation, power collection, and the thermal planning of surface equipment rather than to any inhabited daily rhythm.

Travel

Travel Notes

Travel is limited to named survey staff and approved support crews. Use the current survey approach and assigned surface module, since there is no permanent port or settlement. Visitors may not work outside the assigned survey, begin extraction, or treat either dormant claim as authority to remove water or establish a lasting working.
