Overview
The Record
Gatehold stands at the Embrace-facing entrance to the safest recognized passage through the Shatter. Every vessel entering from the inner system passes its inspections, accepts a Caldrin-approved pilot, and receives a departure window tied to the current movement of the debris. When those movements make the corridor unsafe, or when hostile traffic approaches, Gatehold closes the entrance. A closure is an order, not a warning.
The station operates under Caldrin’s passage authority. It holds no independent claim over the Shatter and cannot redefine the route on its own. Its purpose is narrower and more immediate: to defend the entrance, enforce Caldrin’s decisions, and prevent one reckless vessel from turning a charted crossing into a field of fresh debris.
Its Twofold practice is divided accordingly. Gloam practitioners keep Gatehold’s defenses, patrol patterns, and sealed consignments from unnecessary disclosure; its Sealers ensure that restricted cargo remains closed until it has cleared the passage. Dawn practitioners coordinate the traffic, Summoners reveal usable vectors through the moving field, and Descriers examine any manifest whose declared contents do not agree with what is actually aboard.

Gatehold operates directly under Caldrin’s passage authority as the inner checkpoint of the recognized route through the Shatter. It may inspect traffic, assign escorts, and enforce a closure, but only in Caldrin’s name and under Caldrin’s charts.
The station bears Caldrin’s passage mark distinguished by a local identifier. It has no independent crest, because Gatehold guards the route without possessing it.

Physical Characteristics

- Gravity0.22 g
Gatehold is exposed to vacuum and built to survive the debris field it guards. Its command decks, barracks, inspection halls, and emergency refuges maintain independent pressure systems, allowing damaged sections to be sealed away without compromising the rest of the station.

Gatehold follows a controlled eighteen-hour attitude cycle, turning its sensors, shielded surfaces, and docking approaches through their required orientations. That movement does not define the station’s working day. Operational clocks remain synchronized with Caldrin’s beacon network so that inspections, pilot transfers, and passage windows share a single time across the route.
Culture
The Twofold
Dawn opens the passage. Its practitioners reveal safe vectors, bring crowded approaches into order, and read concealed intent from the movement of otherwise ordinary traffic. Gloam closes it. Its practitioners hide Gatehold’s defensive dispositions, seal the approaches when passage must cease, and shelter vessels whose safe crossing depends upon remaining unseen. Neither aspect governs the station alone: a gate that cannot open is useless, and one that cannot close is no gate at all.
Travel
Travel Notes
Every vessel seeking entry to the recognized passage must transmit its identity, submit to inspection, and accept Gatehold’s assigned vector and departure window. An unregistered vessel may be refused entry, held for further examination, or placed under escort. A ship that rejects routing instructions does not enter the Shatter under Caldrin’s protection.
