Avenor

The Carried Signal

A communications outpost that receives and forwards signals through the interference of the Shatter, keeping the Embrace connected with the Far Reach.

Overview

The Record

Avenor carries the voices of the Embrace through the Shatter. Its arrays receive transmissions weakened or distorted by the debris field, verify their origin and contents, and forward them toward the Far Reach. Messages can travel without Avenor, but more slowly and with far less certainty. For distant settlements, the station often marks the difference between delayed communication and complete isolation.

The exterior is airless and almost entirely occupied by antenna fields, transmission arrays, tracking instruments, and power systems. Only a small portion of Avenor is pressurized. Its inhabited core supports the operators and repair crews, along with limited emergency quarters for stranded travelers and personnel awaiting transport.

The station operates under a Velyrian technical charter that guarantees Edrane equal use of its network. Local authority belongs to the Relay Directorate, whose signal mark appears on the station and all official transmissions, though the charter itself remains registered in Velyr’s name. Neither power may delay or suppress a neutral distress signal, regardless of its source or destination.

Avenor’s operators regard every message entrusted to them as a promise that must be kept. The Directorate publicly records the number successfully delivered each month, and the station measures its standing by that figure. Signals that fail to arrive are entered into a separate ledger, preserved without limit and opened to no one outside the Directorate.

Avenor is not a general passenger station. Docking requires service authorization or a declared emergency, and approaching vessels must remain clear of active antenna fields during transmission windows. Those admitted will find shelter and repairs, but little commerce and no reason to remain once their vessel is cleared to depart.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter310 km
  • Mass0.0000032 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.01 g

Avenor’s exterior is airless and dominated by antenna fields, transmission equipment, and power systems. A compact pressurized core houses its operators and repair crews, with a small number of emergency quarters for stranded travelers.

  • Orbital Radius11,100,000 km
  • Orbital Period138.018 days
  • Rotation21.6 hours
  • Inclination4.4 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.038

Avenor is kept in a controlled 21.6-hour rotation, distributing the heat of Vya and Veo across its surface and bringing its antenna arrays into alignment with scheduled relay corridors. Most transmission windows are planned around this cycle.

Culture

The Twofold

Avenor’s operators treat every signal entrusted to them as a promise that must be kept. When a distant relay falls silent, the Directorate first calls upon a Descrier to determine whether the failure lies with the message, the machinery, or the people stationed there. Only then does it dispatch an engineering crew.

Travel

Travel Notes

Avenor is closed to ordinary passenger traffic. Vessels may dock only with service authorization or under a declared emergency, and all approaching craft must remain outside active antenna zones during scheduled transmission windows.
