The Lock

The gate facing the Far Reach

An Edrane-aligned fortress station able to close the narrow outer passage between the Shatter and the Far Reach.

Overview

The Record

The Lock turns a narrow outer approach into a decision. Armored structures, patrol docks, and movable barriers can stop ordinary traffic, isolate an arriving vessel, or close the route when a hostile force or debris surge threatens the Far Reach.

Lock Command maintains readiness rather than a commercial port. Traffic is inspected outside the defensive perimeter, and a closure sends waiting vessels toward designated holding routes. Pressure districts and defensive sections can isolate for long periods, allowing the station to remain closed without leaving its crews dependent on immediate relief.

The station is aligned with Edrane, whose authority across the Far Reach depends on a usable outer route. Caldrin retains authority over the recognized passage through the Shatter behind it. The Lock may deny entry at the boundary, but it cannot replace Caldrin’s warrants within the passage itself.

Gloam practice governs concealed defenses, withheld access, and the patience to close the approach before a threat reaches the gate. Dawn coordinates evacuation and rescue, while Assayers advise command on hostile intent. The station’s strength is refusal; once it closes, legitimate traffic and Edrani supply suffer the same delay as everyone else.

The Lock is an Edrane-aligned fortress station governing access at the outer exit from the Shatter. Lock Command may inspect, hold, or refuse traffic at the boundary. Caldrin retains authority over the recognized passage behind it, so an Edrani clearance does not supersede Caldrin’s route warrants.

The station uses an Edrani military gate device with its local identifier. That mark identifies a dependent command, not an independent sovereign.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter35 km
  • Mass0.000000000008 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.25 g

The Lock is exposed to vacuum outside. Interior districts are divided by pressure bulkheads, and defensive sections carry independent air and power reserves so they can remain isolated through a closure or hull breach.

  • Orbital Radius11,350,000 km
  • Orbital Period142.637 days
  • Rotation20 hours
  • Inclination5.8 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.044

The Lock follows a 142.637-standard-day orbit while maintaining a controlled twenty-hour attitude cycle. That cycle governs station orientation and internal clocks, not a natural day. Readiness changes with traffic, debris forecasts, and warning conditions rather than exterior light.

Culture

The Twofold

Gloam practice governs denied passage, concealed defenses, and the patience to close before a threat reaches the gate. Dawn supports clear coordination during evacuation and rescue. Assayers advise command on hostile intent before the barriers are committed; their reading informs a closure but does not issue one.

Travel

Travel Notes

Request passage before entering the defensive perimeter and be prepared for inspection in an exterior holding position. When the Lock closes, follow the assigned Caldrin-approved holding route; approaching a barrier or patrol dock without clearance is treated as an attempt to force passage. The station provides emergency direction, not general berthing.
