Crossing

Where every convoy changes hands

A neutral transfer station where vessels exchange pilots, shift cargo modules, and assemble into convoys before entering Caldrin’s charted passage through the Shatter.

Overview

The Record

Crossing is the principal staging station for organized travel through the Shatter. Vessels arrive separately and depart in ordered convoys, exchanging pilots, transferring cargo modules, taking on emergency supplies, and completing repairs that cannot safely wait until the far side. For most travelers, it is the last predictable port before entering the debris field.

The station operates under a neutral charter recognized by Caldrin. Its authorities assign berths, organize convoy order, verify pilots and escorts, and delay vessels that are not prepared for the crossing. They do not possess the Remnant’s authority to declare a route open or closed. Crossing prepares ships for the passage; Caldrin alone decides whether the passage may be attempted.

Its Twofold culture is practical and deliberately balanced. Dawn governs traffic control, inspection, repair, and the coordination required to move many vessels safely through a changing route. Gloam protects sealed manifests, private negotiations, and convoy plans from those who might profit by learning them too early. At Crossing, disclosure keeps ships from colliding; secrecy keeps them from being followed.

Crossing is a neutral charter station recognized by Caldrin. Its administration governs docking, transfers, pilot assignments, and daily operations, but it remains bound by the Remnant’s decisions concerning the passage. Crossing may organize a convoy; it cannot authorize that convoy to enter the Shatter.

Official personnel, cleared cargo, and approved transfer routes bear the station’s pilotage mark. The symbol identifies chartered authority within Crossing but carries no claim of sovereignty beyond it.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter32 km
  • Mass0.000000000006 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.2 g

Crossing is divided into independently pressurized cargo, passenger, and residential modules, allowing any damaged section to be isolated without closing the station. Sealed transit corridors connect the inhabited areas, while the freight spines, docking frames, and modular cargo racks remain exposed to vacuum.

  • Orbital Period121.161 days
  • Rotation24 hours

Crossing follows a standard twenty-four-hour station clock independent of its surrounding light cycle. Operations are organized around Caldrin’s passage windows rather than local day or night. When a major route opens, traffic control, freight handling, repairs, and pilot services run continuously until the waiting convoys have departed.

Culture

The Twofold

Dawn practice is woven into traffic control, where pilots, vessels, and changing route conditions must be understood as a single moving system. Gloam protects sealed manifests, private negotiations, and convoy plans from rivals, raiders, and anyone who might use advance knowledge of a departure against it. Crossing depends equally upon knowing where every ship must be and concealing that knowledge from those who should not have it.

Travel

Travel Notes

Traffic through Crossing is heavy and strictly controlled. Captains must accept assigned berths, approved passage pilots, inspection times, and convoy positions before they are cleared to depart. A vessel that misses its window may wait until the next route opening, regardless of rank, cargo, or destination.
