Greywatch

Eyes upon the shifting field

A remote surveillance station tracking debris, unregistered traffic, and emerging hazards along the Shatter’s secondary routes.

Overview

The Record

Greywatch monitors the secondary routes running beyond Caldrin’s recognized passage through the Shatter. These paths are less stable, less thoroughly charted, and used most often by salvage crews, unregistered vessels, and captains unwilling to wait for an official crossing. The station tracks debris movement, unauthorized traffic, abandoned craft, and any developing hazard likely to reach the safer corridor.

Greywatch is aligned with Caldrin but holds none of Caldrin’s passage authority. It may issue warnings, challenge a vessel, and forward a track to patrol commands, but it cannot declare a route safe, guarantee an escort, or grant a ship the protection of an official chart. Greywatch observes and reports. Decisions to close a passage or dispatch force are made elsewhere.

Gloam practice shapes the station more deeply than Dawn. Its crews value the unseen watch, the signal withheld until it is understood, and the patient reading of evidence that arrives incomplete. Greywatch is not remembered for what it finds in open view. Its reputation rests on noticing what has changed before anyone else realizes there was something there to watch.

Caldrin

Greywatch is operated by Caldrin-aligned observers as the surveillance arm of the wider passage network. Its local command directs observation and reporting, but the station holds no independent authority over transit through the Shatter. Formal warnings and route advisories are issued in Caldrin’s name.

The station bears a restrained observation-service mark identifying its personnel, instruments, and transmissions. It is an institutional emblem, not a sovereign crest.

Physical Characteristics

Ground and Sky

  • Diameter14 km
  • Mass0.000000000001 Earth masses
  • Gravity0.16 g

Greywatch is exposed to vacuum beyond its hull. The inhabited core maintains a cool, dry atmosphere within human tolerance, chosen to limit corrosion, condensation, and contamination of the station’s sensitive instruments. Crews dress for the machinery rather than for comfort.

Orbit and Time

Path Around Oranth

  • Orbital Order642
  • Orbital Radius9,400,000 km
  • Orbital Period107.506 days
  • Rotation26 hours
  • Inclination5.7 degrees
  • Eccentricity0.048

Greywatch passes through a controlled twenty-six-hour attitude cycle, turning its sensor arrays across successive sectors of the surrounding debris field. Crew watches overlap at every change of orientation, ensuring that no section of the monitored routes is left unattended while one team transfers responsibility to the next.

Culture

The Twofold

Gloam shapes the keeping of Greywatch: patient observation, surveillance conducted without announcing itself, and a disciplined memory for objects that are no longer where the record says they should be. Dawn enters when those fragments must be brought into order and made legible to others. Gloam notices the absence; Dawn turns it into a warning someone can act upon.

Travel

Travel Notes

Unscheduled docking is strongly discouraged, as an approaching vessel’s drive emissions, reflected light, and communications noise can compromise ongoing observations. Most ships exchange information with Greywatch remotely and continue on their way. Docking is reserved for authorized service traffic, essential repairs, or medical emergencies.
