Overview
The Record
Kestrel is the Shatter’s free port, a hollowed fragment of Kalemdil serving salvagers, frontier traders, guides, and people avoiding larger authorities. It offers what more orderly ports separate: a berth, a buyer, a route, and few questions about how any of them were obtained.
Its 510,000 residents live in pressurized districts cut through the asteroid. Each dock maintains its own atmosphere, filtration, and safety standards, so crossing an internal pressure boundary can also mean entering a different law and a different tolerance for risk.
Kestrel’s trade depends on two kinds of confidence. Bargains must be clear enough for strangers to work together, while cargo and passengers must be able to disappear from wider notice. Summoners are hired to reveal passages through the wreckage. Effacers are rumored to erase the trail of an arrival, but no dock admits to retaining one.
The port is autonomous because no Great or Major Moon holds a recognized claim. A compact of docks and resident assemblies governs only what its members accept in common; individual docks and free captains keep their own marks, and Kestrel maintains neither a unified crest nor a common name for external acts. Caldrin’s control of safe passage and the Binding’s right of inspection limit that independence from outside.
Kestrel applies the loosest reading of the Binding found anywhere and never prints it. A spring wound at the dock and carried loaded is treated on most wharves as no different from a drawn bow. No signatory has endorsed that position, and Kestrel abandons it the moment an inspector enters the dock.
Political Relationships
Standing
Standing at a Glance
- Political Status
- Autonomous
- Civilization Status
- Inhabited
- Heraldic Standing
- No Unified Mark
Kestrel is an autonomous free port governed by a compact of docks and resident assemblies. No Great or Major Moon holds a recognized claim, and the compact binds only the matters its members accept in common. Caldrin controls safe passage to the port, while Binding inspectors may enter its public docks and impose passage restrictions for weapons-law violations. Kestrel’s independence does not exempt it from either constraint.

Physical Characteristics
Ground and Sky
- Diameter260 km
- Mass0.0000011 Earth masses
- Gravity0.01 g
Kestrel’s exterior is airless. Its 510,000 residents occupy pressurized districts hollowed through the asteroid, but there is no single habitat system: adjoining docks may maintain different pressure, filtration, and emergency standards. The air is breathable where local machinery is working and local rules are enforced. A pressure door marks a real environmental boundary, not merely an administrative one.
Orbit and Time
Path Around Oranth
- Orbital Order685
- Orbital Radius10,500,000 km
- Orbital Period126.98 days
- Rotation11.4 hours
- Inclination6.8 degrees
- Eccentricity0.071
Kestrel rotates once every 11.4 standard hours while orbiting Oranth every 126.98 standard days. That rotation changes exterior light and thermal exposure but does not create a shared civil day, because most inhabited galleries have no windows and no central authority sets their clocks. Each district follows its own schedule, with dock sirens and shift changes carrying more authority than daylight.
Culture
The Twofold
Kestrel hires from both aspects and asks little about prior service. Summoners reveal temporary passages through the wreckage and are paid openly because every arriving vessel needs them. Effacers are said to remove the trail of an arrival; no dock acknowledges employing one, and the rumor has never become a record. Dawn opens the route. Gloam keeps the passenger or cargo from being followed through it.
Travel
Travel Notes
A vessel may dock when a berthmaster accepts its fee, but reaching Kestrel still requires a current chart recognized by Caldrin and a pilot able to use it. On arrival, travelers must identify which dock has accepted them and learn that district’s pressure rules, fees, and local law before crossing an internal boundary. Binding inspectors may enter public docks, and a suspected violation brings immediate passage restrictions regardless of what the berthmaster previously allowed.
