Korvan Gate

Orbital Station

Kharad’s fortified orbital gate, where vessels are cleared, assembled, and routed for the descent into Oranth’s atmosphere.

Overview

The Record

Korvan Gate turns a hostile atmosphere into a controlled departure. Armored docks and traffic apertures face Oranth while sensor towers, beacon arrays, and navigation rooms follow radiation, magnetic storms, turbulent cloud layers, and the pressures below. Deep-divers, harvest vessels, escorts, and supply ships gather in protected berths until the station can assign a convoy and a route.

Kharad commands the corridor. Civilian specialists and industrial representatives help operate it, and Velyrian contracts govern some of the cargo and infrastructure passing through, but only Kharadi authorities may clear a vessel or open a descent window. When forecasts change, a ship already inspected can remain at berth; when instruments fail, licensed practitioners take over work no contract can compel the station to perform.

The Gate also carries an older uncertainty. The Faithful are reckoned to have begun here, after a failure of the corridor illumination was entered as maintenance and left so for nearly two generations. A Dhorak review called it sabotage ninety years later and did not record what had changed its judgment.

Identity and Function

Function

Korvan Gate controls the principal approach to the Deep. Its crews combine atmospheric forecasts, radiation and magnetic readings, vessel inspections, cargo clearances, and convoy assignments into descent routes that may remain usable only briefly.

Identity and Function

Governance

Kharadi orbital and military authorities command the station and decide who may descend. Civilian navigators, atmospheric specialists, customs officers, and industrial representatives advise and operate the traffic system; Velyrian contracts may cover cargo or infrastructure, but confer no authority to open a corridor.

Environment and Travel

Environment

Armored docks, traffic apertures, beacon arrays, sensor towers, and emergency shelters face Oranth from orbit above Kharad. Radiation and magnetic disturbances can blind instruments or close exposed sections, while protected berths hold vessels until the atmosphere yields another route.

Travel Notes

Authorized traffic to and from the Deep passes through the Gate. A cleared ship may still wait for inspection, a convoy assignment, or a recalculated route after the weather changes. Departure from the published approach or an attempted descent without Kharadi permission is treated as a major security violation.

Culture

The Twofold

The Gate makes Kharad’s Twofold tension operational. Licensed Summoners reveal temporary ways through Oranth’s storms, and Descriers read dangers hidden from failing instruments: Dawn work without which this Gloam moon could not hold the descent. Occulters keep sensitive corridors out of published approaches, while every Deep-diver carries an Abider for the endurance demanded below. Kharad settles no doctrine here; it licenses the practitioners and opens the route.
