Nhalor Grove

Research Station

Elowen’s sacred living archive, preserving rare interdependent ecosystems beneath an ancient canopy while admitting only research the sanctuary can survive.

Overview

The Record

Nhalor Grove preserves a living system without opening it into a collection. Beneath some of Elowen’s oldest canopy, immense roots divide a dark river into channels, luminous pools, waterfalls, and sheltered islands. Observation chambers and archive structures are fitted among stone and root. Elevated paths cross the wet ground without becoming roads or requiring a clearing.

Rare plants, animals, fungi, and microbial systems remain here because they are kept in relation to one another. Seed and tissue archives support that work but do not replace it. The Grove’s custodians permit study only when observation will not become possession, exposure, or a disturbance from which the basin cannot recover. A research approval issued through Bryneth can therefore end at Nhalor’s boundary or be withdrawn after arrival.

Myrran institutions contribute knowledge and resources through Elowen’s covenant, but hold no title to the sanctuary and cannot direct its custodians. Nhalor remains under Elowen’s law. Its value depends on that limit: much of what can be learned beneath the canopy would cease to exist if the Grove were made easy to enter, cross, or remove from.

Identity and Function

Function

Nhalor protects rare plant, animal, fungal, and microbial systems as living relationships rather than isolated specimens. Custodians maintain observation chambers, canopy walks, living records, seed and tissue archives, and research programs whose methods are restricted by the needs of the basin.

Identity and Function

Governance

A local custodial institution holds the Grove under Elowen’s ecological law. Bryneth may approve a research visit, but Nhalor’s custodians control conduct within the sanctuary and may revoke access. Myrran institutions provide expertise and resources through the covenant without owning, governing, or directing the archive.

Environment and Travel

Environment

Colossal roots divide a humid river basin into dark channels, luminous pools, waterfalls, and sheltered islands beneath continuous canopy. Mist, spores, floodwater, elevated walks, and small observation structures occupy the space without producing a cleared road or conventional settlement.

Travel Notes

Nhalor has no public port. Approved visitors come from Bryneth by controlled water routes and elevated paths with a receiving steward. Flooding, spores, pollen, low visibility, and fragile habitat make unguided movement unsafe. Fire, specimen collection, and departure from marked routes require explicit custodial authorization.

Culture

The Twofold

Nhalor holds Dawn and Gloam as conditions of the same survival. Quickeners tend seed terraces, Menders support crews on wet ground, and Reclaimers intervene when a stand begins to fail. Sextons preserve the living archive, while Eclipsers maintain the quiet and concealment the basin requires. Growth without shelter would expose the Grove; shelter without renewal would leave nothing living to keep.
