Bryneth

City

Elowen’s principal permitted settlement and covenant seat, admitting visitors and hearing petitions without allowing the surrounding forest to become ordinary civic ground.

Overview

The Record

Bryneth is where Elowen permits settlement to become public. The town follows a narrow shore beside a dark forest lake, its halls, residences, research houses, gardens, hearing chambers, and landing field confined to old terraces beneath immense trees. Boardwalks cross roots and wet ground without turning them into roads, and the clearing’s boundaries have changed little across generations.

Every function of the settlement passes through that limit. Authorized arrivals undergo biological screening here. Custodians hear petitions for residency, research, travel, specimen work, and development, and refusal is a normal outcome rather than a failure of process. The councils may permit a use within Bryneth without opening the forest beyond it, which is why landing at the town grants no general right to collect, camp, clear, or travel inland.

Bryneth also maintains Elowen’s covenant with Myr. Myrran scholars and representatives advise, advocate, and provide diplomatic support as protected guests; local custodians retain every governing decision. The settlement is therefore a covenant seat rather than a capital in the ordinary sense. It does not command the moon. It gives Elowen one controlled place to receive the outside world without allowing reception to become possession.

Identity and Function

Function

Bryneth receives authorized arrivals, conducts biological screening, hears petitions for residence, research, travel, and limited development, and houses the councils maintaining Elowen’s covenant with Myr. It also supports visiting scholars and the gardens and research houses permitted within its established clearing.

Identity and Function

Governance

Elowen’s custodians govern Bryneth through councils responsible for settlement, ecological protection, research access, and the use of cleared land. They may admit, condition, delay, or refuse a petition. Myrran scholars and representatives provide expertise, advocacy, diplomatic protection, and covenant support, but cannot authorize a clearing, direct local councils, or govern the settlement.

Environment and Travel

Environment

Bryneth follows a narrow permitted shoreline beside a dark forest lake. Low halls, residences, research houses, gardens, boardwalks, hearing chambers, and landing facilities fit existing terraces beneath immense trees. Paths bridge roots and wet ground rather than replacing them, and the clearing boundary remains fixed so the canopy continues around and above the settlement.

Environment and Travel

Travel Notes

Land only at Bryneth’s authorized field with a stated purpose, a receiving steward, and completed biological screening. Landing permission covers the settlement and the approved business named in it. It does not authorize specimen collection, an independent camp, a new clearing, or travel into the interior. Beyond Bryneth, use water, boardwalks, or a canopy route with the guide and permission assigned by the custodians.

Culture

The Twofold

Quickeners and Menders work in Bryneth’s gardens and research houses where cultivation or healing strengthens the living system. An Assayer attends residency hearings and weighs the petitioner’s fitness to accept custodial limits. Occulters keep interior approaches out of visitor materials, while Sextons preserve the record of every permitted clearing. Dawn enables careful use; Gloam prevents that use from widening into exposure.
