Overview
The Record
Quelthar Rift holds 460,000 people across linked geothermal holds, but it is not one city. Habitation runs along a long fracture beneath the glacier, joining pump houses, ore lifts, workshops, reservoirs, and heated caverns by enclosed rail and insulated conduit. Each hold occupies ground people can keep warm. The bridges between them make one industrial corridor without turning separate settlements into a single municipality.
Independent hold councils govern locally and bind themselves through agreements on heat, water, transport, emergency shelter, and industrial safety. A failure in one system can threaten several holds, so shared work is agreed where survival crosses a boundary. Neither Zorvek nor Koravel administers the councils. Koravelan protection may stand behind an external contract, but it gives no Koravelan mission authority over a pump house, workshop, or hold gate.
Most of Valdyr’s geothermal surplus is collected here. Turbines and exchange systems draw from the rift, while workshops make cold-rated machinery, seals, conduits, and structural fittings for frozen settlements. A new hold requires a tested fracture before people or machinery are committed to it. Every agreement is judged against the possibility that warmth may stop before help arrives.
The deepest caverns are Valdyr’s chief Gloam ceremonial sites. Abiders hold them through freeze and vent disturbance, often for shares in the systems preserved by their work. Menders answer when a rift wall or inhabited passage fails. Entry remains under the holds: an outsider needs a contract, local sponsorship, or a genuine need for refuge.

Quelthar follows a deep geothermal fracture beneath the glacier. Pump houses, turbines, ore lifts, reservoirs, enclosed railways, insulated conduits, workshops, and inhabited caverns occupy the dark stone between ice above and volcanic heat below.
