Overview
The Record
The Iron Stair climbs from Othryn’s inhabited valleys to landing terraces above the mountain escarpment. Roads and enclosed railways enter the rock, emerge onto exposed bridges, meet cliff elevators, and divide again through tunnels and waystations. Seen across the face of the mountain, their illuminated stages give the corridor its name. Ore and machinery make the ascent beside passengers, supplies, and delegations bound for the high ports.
The Stair is a royal road. Crown-appointed wardens administer its checkpoints, tunnels, customs stations, elevators, and ports, replacing the separate tolls and inspections that once divided the ascent. A shipment for Kharad is inspected and tolled once, and its tonnage reaches Dorrath’s ledgers before the buyer receives it. One writ now carries a traveler from the lower road to the landing terraces.
That unity ends at the road’s edge. The holds still control their own approaches, mines, and concealed routes, and a royal transit writ opens none of them. Nor can paperwork compel the mountain: snow, landslide, wind, thin air, maintenance, or security orders close sections routinely. The crown controls passage through the corridor. Weather decides whether there is a corridor to use.

Governance
The crown controls the Iron Stair and appoints wardens over its checkpoints, tunnels, elevators, customs stations, and high ports. One royal writ admits a traveler from the lower road to the landing terraces. The holds retain authority over their own approaches and private workings, which the writ does not open.
Environment and Travel
Environment
The corridor ascends a near-vertical escarpment through rock tunnels, glacial zones, metallic dust, heavy cloud, exposed bridges, and dangerously thin high-altitude air. Its upper landing terraces stand above much of the lower weather but remain exposed to wind and cold.

Travel Notes
A royal writ covers the Stair from valley floor to landing terrace, but storms, landslides, maintenance, security orders, and priority traffic can still close or redirect it. Carry supplemental oxygen on exposed high sections and do not treat passage on the royal road as permission to enter a neighboring hold.
