Overview
The Record
The Seven Lanterns stand on narrow volcanic islands across one of Caelor’s most dangerous approaches. Each fortified tower watches a different reach of sea and atmosphere, measuring current, wind, cloud, and the conditions facing descending spacecraft. Their observations become one signal system: beacons, route guidance, weather warnings, and closures trusted by vessels bound for ports belonging to rival kingdoms.
When conditions fail, the chain changes from guide to barrier and rescue service. The Lanterns close maritime passages and atmospheric descent lanes, dispatch crews beyond ordinary visibility, maintain communications, and receive survivors in protected berths and healing houses. A captain may dispute the forecast. Participating ports still treat the closure as binding and may deny docking privileges to a vessel that ignored it.
No kingdom owns the entire chain. Each Lantern governs its own island and crews under a cooperative compact older than the Captains’ union. The Captains chartered that compact rather than replacing it because Caelor already possessed the thing its divided harbors most needed: warnings no crown could edit for advantage. The Lanterns command no territory ashore. Within the approach, their signal is the authority that keeps the route usable.
