Blackreef Yards

Fortress

A fortified volcanic-reef shipyard building storm-hardened vessels and close-defense escorts for a Talassaran court, Avarran fleets, and foreign buyers.

Overview

The Record

Blackreef Yards turn a volcanic reef into a test no vessel can avoid. Protected cuts widened over centuries hold dry docks and construction basins behind massive breakwaters, while ship halls, foundries, repair gantries, worker districts, and armored slips fill the stable rock. Hulls are built low, heavily framed, and easy to seal because unfinished work must survive the same outer water the completed vessel is meant to enter.

The Yards build deep-water ships, pilot cutters, rescue craft, atmospheric marine transports, and escorts designed for danger at close range. Their defensive vessels resist grappling and breach and carry crews trained to fight within passages rather than exchange force across open distance. Avarran fleets and foreign captains buy smaller designs; Talassaran courts reserve the heaviest storm ships for their own waters.

Blackreef belongs to one maritime court, not to Talassar as a unified government. Local shipwright houses and harbor command control contracts, trials, designs, defensive cuts, and military berths. Buyers receive the vessel and access their agreement names, not the Yards themselves. Caelor produces more ships and calls Blackreef’s work overbuilt. Blackreef answers with the measure its environment rewards: not how many ships leave the slips, but how many return after the sea has tested every joint.

Identity and Function

Function

Blackreef constructs, repairs, refits, and tests deep-water ships, pilot cutters, rescue craft, atmospheric marine transports, and boarding escorts. Its designs prioritize sealing, structural endurance, resistance to grappling, and continued operation in weather severe enough to close ordinary yards.

Identity and Function

Governance

One Talassaran maritime court owns Blackreef. Shipwright houses, harbor command, and defended dock offices manage construction, trials, contracts, and access under that court’s law. Avarran and foreign buyers may maintain contracting missions and occupy assigned berths, but local authority retains the designs, defensive cuts, military pens, and decision to release a completed vessel.

Environment and Travel

Environment

Dry docks and construction halls occupy protected cuts widened into a jagged volcanic reef behind massive breakwaters. Sea gates, armored slips, enclosed foundries, repair gantries, worker districts, and defended vessel pens use every stable surface above violent outer water. Hulls remain low, heavily framed, and easy to seal because the same storms that test them also threaten unfinished work.

Travel Notes

Arrive by authorized vessel or approved short atmospheric transfer from the nearby harbor, then report to the berth and district named in the contract. Storm trials can close the surrounding water without notice, and harbor command may hold foreign crews inside assigned areas until delivery. A purchasing agreement does not authorize access to design halls, military pens, defensive cuts, or another buyer’s vessel.

Culture

The Twofold

Cellarers preserve timber, composites, and stores against the wet and salt that threaten an unfinished hull. Abiders accompany storm trials, holding crews and systems through weather used to decide whether a design passes. Dawn practice attends launches, rescue construction, repair, and the return of damaged vessels to service. Harbor command’s Occulters keep defensive cuts and military pens off commercial plans. None of these offices substitutes for a structural survey or grants a practitioner authority to accept a ship.
