The Sealed Tongue

The retained Sealer trade

Velyr’s professional trade in individually retained Sealers, whose filed contracts keep negotiations unreadable without making false statements appear true.

The Sealed Tongue is Velyr’s formal trade in retained Sealers. Practitioners are hired individually at high hourly rates, while major houses at Vhalessa keep them on standing engagement. The arrangement is lawful and documented: each retainer is a filed contract, even when the conversation protected under it never enters a record.

The service is refusal rather than deception. A Sealer does not make a false statement convincing. Attempting that would fail an Assayer’s examination and end the professional standing on which future retainers depend. The work instead prevents another person from making out what the protected principal will not disclose. Negotiators understand that a sealed counterpart is unreadable, not thereby honest.

That distinction creates a practical problem. Hiring a Sealer for one meeting announces that the meeting contains something worth protecting. The most valued practitioners are therefore retained across whole seasons, covering routine conversations alongside consequential ones. An observer can see the retainer but cannot use its timing to identify which exchange mattered.

The trade’s legality depends on preserving individual practice. Members negotiate their own engagements and are never retained collectively under one contract. Two Sealers intentionally serving one combined purpose would cease to look like parallel professionals and risk prosecution as an unauthorized combination. The Sealed Tongue can standardize the respectability of a retainer, but it cannot act as a body without threatening the legal protection that lets its members work.

The Twofold — Gloam

The Sealed Tongue practices refusal rather than misdirection. A protected matter does not leave the exchange, and no claim is made that the principal therefore speaks truth.
