Hereditary trade
The Mistbound
Ysil offers no name for them
Ysil’s hereditary Occulter trade, retained by families and holds to keep households, routes, and property outside public charts and registers.
The Mistbound is the foreign name for Ysil’s hereditary trade in concealment. Ysil publishes no count of its Occulters and recognizes no state service under the name. Practitioners contract with families and individual holds to keep a household, route, valley, or holding from entering public charts and registers.
The trade maintains omissions rather than governing what official archives may record. A contract begun four generations earlier may pass from practitioner to descendant and from client family to its heirs. The original reason may be lost while the danger of ending the arrangement grows, because a holding entered suddenly raises questions about where it was and why generations of documents omitted it.
Those contracts reinforce Ysil’s fragmented government. Each hold controls its own access, records, and terms of reception, and no common authority can order disclosure across the moon. Varos represents Ysil externally only when requested and cannot compel a hold to provide a route, landing, or register. Some holds decline representation because accepting it requires enough identification to defeat the privacy they have paid to preserve.
The Mistbound possess no public charter, collective register, or acknowledged leader. Their work can keep clients outside ordinary administration, but it cannot supply trade access, life-support machinery, or the protection a hold may eventually request from Varos. Concealment therefore gives the trade practical influence without creating a government able to speak for Ysil or bind its clients as one body.
The Twofold — Gloam
The Mistbound treat concealment as inherited work rather than public doctrine. Their obligation is to maintain an agreed omission for as long as the client line continues to retain them.
