Hereditary monarchy

The Iron Crown

The kingdom of Othryn, seated at Dorrath Hold

Othryn’s hereditary crown, controlling external trade, royal roads, high ports, armies, and warrants while the old holds retain their workings and household authority.

The Iron Crown is Othryn’s hereditary monarchy, held by House Skarn at Dorrath Hold and passed to the eldest heir. The kingdom is about three centuries old. Before it, the mountain holds were separate sovereign powers whose mining houses negotiated their own external contracts.

Othryn united in response to Kharadi purchasing rather than invasion. Kharad’s foundries offered terms that rewarded the first hold to sign and weakened every later seller. The first Skarn placed the competing contracts together and read them before the holds at Dorrath, showing what separate bargains would do to the moon’s value. She persuaded the houses to accept a crown able to negotiate for all of them.

Royal authority covers what leaves Othryn and the infrastructure that carries it. The crown sets ore quotas, export prices, customs, armies, external warrants, and the moon’s dealings abroad. It controls the Iron Stair and the high ports, so outbound cargo is inspected, tolled, and counted once. No hold may negotiate separate terms with Kharad. The crown also sets the wider military obligations owed by Othryn’s vassal, Tharos, without administering Tharic forces internally.

The holds retain their workings, wealth, household authority, concealed routes, and old privileges. The crown does not govern private galleries. It requires an accurate declaration of ore because royal revenue is calculated from the admitted tonnage. Assayers attend the sittings to test those declarations. A hold may refuse a royal question, but it may not understate what it raised.

The monarchy depends on the founding bargain remaining better than divided negotiation. The houses at Dorrath are loyal and remain conscious of the powers they surrendered. Each Skarn repeats the original contractual argument at accession. The crown commands Othryn because the holds still accept that unified terms preserve more of their independence than separate bargains would.

The Twofold — Dawn

Assayers test the ore declarations on which royal revenue depends. Holds bring Sealers to preserve the lawful distinction between refusing a question and giving the crown a false tonnage.
