Thessane

City

Thessane preserves the records through which Velyr argues law, history, legitimacy, and the formal classification of the Twofold.

Overview

The Record

Thessane preserves the evidence from which Velyr makes claims. Treaties, judgments, genealogies, navigation records, diplomatic correspondence, religious commentary, and competing histories fill repository towers and purpose-built vaults beneath the present city. Older libraries remain inside its foundations, so a researcher may descend through several eras of custody before reaching the collection sought.

Those records have decided inheritances, territorial claims, trade disputes, and the legitimacy of governments far beyond Velyr. Custodians insist that keeping an account is not the same as owning the past it describes. Other moons question the distinction, particularly when access to the decisive document remains with a Velyrian institution and the senior colleges of Thessane arbitrate its interpretation.

Thessane keeps the Vhalessa strike as an unresolved record rather than a settled accusation. The crew died in the crash. Several groups claimed responsibility, others were blamed, and the surviving accounts do not establish which claim, if any, is true. The repositories preserve the competing cases without ranking uncertainty as proof. Descent Law rests on an event whose authors remain unknown.

The city applies the same authority to the Twofold. Its schools maintain the registries that sort practitioners into sixteen roles and its commentary travels farther than most of its graduates. Thessane’s power lies in preserving and classifying what civilization has said about itself. Its limitation is that a complete record may still be partial, and a durable interpretation is not necessarily a neutral one.

Identity and Function

Function

The city keeps treaties, judgments, genealogies, histories, navigation records, diplomatic correspondence, and religious scholarship while training archivists, jurists, and Twofold scholars.

Identity and Function

Governance

Overlapping archives, universities, legal colleges, and religious institutions administer Thessane. Each repository’s custodians control its holdings and access. Senior colleges arbitrate disputes over records and interpretation, but no single office owns or governs every collection.

Environment and Travel

Environment

Archive courts descend between repository towers and university bridges into underground vaults. Older libraries remain built into the foundations, so study, storage, and movement through the city follow layers accumulated across successive eras.

Travel Notes

Public university districts are accessible after ordinary orbital clearance. Restricted repositories separately require institutional sponsorship, a documented purpose, and authorization from the custodians holding the requested material. Admission to one archive grants no right to another.

Culture

The Twofold

Dawn and Gloam schools dispute whether the aspects are complements or whether one deserves philosophical priority. Thessane’s registries largely define the sixteen roles used across the Embrace, yet the city has never certified a Seer or Effacer whom rival institutions acknowledge. Its faculties answer that they produce scholarship rather than prodigies; Serath replies that this proves the weakness of classification without practice.
