The Scions
Seated in the Velyrian archives
Velyrian archivists who treat surviving Kalemdil records as the separated portion of a collection inherited through Thessane’s institutional continuity.
The Scions are Velyrian archivists who claim Kalemdil’s surviving records by institutional descent. They argue that the material is not salvage but the separated portion of a Velyrian collection. Kalemdil institutions corresponded with counterparts at Thessane, used the same filing forms, and sometimes deposited copies there before the Shattering. The archive at Thessane is therefore treated as the elder half of a divided record.
The argument converts archival continuity into a claim of inheritance. Its limit is equally clear: the same principle could give Velyr an interest in papers from any foreign institution that once deposited a copy at Thessane. Velyr does not apply the rule elsewhere, leaving rivals to argue that Kalemdil receives a special doctrine devised for material Velyr wants.
The Scions exercise their claim through accession rather than enforcement in the field. When papers from a fragment reach Thessane, the archivists catalogue them, assign a shelfmark, and make them available for citation in Velyrian opinions. Repeated use gives the document a history inside Velyr’s legal and scholarly record before Aurelian or other claimants can dislodge it. Some claims now carry three centuries of scholarship. That practice creates durable custody where no shared Kalemdil authority can issue a final judgment.
The Scions do not attempt to accession the sealed material held by Caldrin’s Custody. Those collections were closed without surviving instructions that would place them cleanly within the inherited filing. Opening them could support the Velyrian sequence or contradict it. The Scions leave the seals alone because an archival inheritance depends on presenting the estate as ordered, and the material least able to fit that order is also the material Caldrin will not release.
The Twofold — Gloam
The Scions treat inheritance as custody. They hold Kalemdil records as institutional heirs, not as salvagers, and make continuity of filing the basis of the claim.
