Doctrinal aristocracy

The Ironbound

The Long Obligation of Mordane

Mordane’s mining houses, whose claims descend with preserved rolls of the dead and obligations inherited from the first working of each seam.

The Ironbound are Mordane’s mining houses, an aristocracy whose title to a seam rests on continuous work and a complete roll of those who died opening it. Each estate keeps that roll in a chamber cut beside the working it records. Sextons preserve the chamber as it was made. A house unable to produce the full sequence may still possess machinery and labor, but the other houses regard its claim as unfinished.

The doctrine makes endurance a property obligation. It is public within Mordane, and its authority comes from preservation rather than a hidden rite. What survives is owed to those who endured first, and the debt passes with the seam to each succeeding generation. A house cannot readily sell a working because it would be transferring an obligation it does not believe it has standing to assign. Ground therefore changes hands rarely, and industrial ownership remains bound to family memory rather than price alone.

The Shortfall ended Mordane’s independence without ending that internal order. After Kharad refused Mordani cargo and the rest of the Grasp followed, the houses accepted mineral quotas, military access, standing audits, and Kharadi representation. They retained their estates, docks, and extraction rights. The remembrance chambers include the dead of the refusal the houses call the Years of Held Iron, binding the loss of sovereignty into the same record used to justify each local claim.

Assayers are the part of the settlement the houses have never absorbed into their doctrine. They attend the yards when charge inventories and excavation returns are signed, testing records that the Ironbound would prefer to rest on inherited authority. The objection is not to their competence. It is that a Dawn certification now stands beside a right to descend that Mordane considers inherited. Two centuries of required audit have made the practice routine without making it accepted.

The Twofold — Gloam

The Ironbound treat Gloam as an inherited obligation. Sextons preserve the dead and the workings attached to them; continuity makes the present claim legitimate.
