Darsen

City

Caldrin’s fortified customs basin, where the Remnant decides whether a vessel has a current chart, a lawful escort, and permission to cross the Shatter.

Overview

The Record

Darsen is the set of offices every lawful crossing of the Shatter must satisfy. The Remnant’s chart rooms revise routes against moving debris; its beacon administration determines whether a marked corridor still exists; its customs inspectorate examines what intends to use it; and its licensing bodies decide which escorts Caldrin will acknowledge. A route that worked before carries no authority once the field has shifted.

Those institutions occupy a fortified basin whose steep walls shelter it from smaller fragments and some of the gravitational disturbances moving through the Shatter. Landing fields, inspection halls, defensive structures, and illuminated navigation pylons cover the basin floor. Residences, chart offices, and administrative chambers are built into the cold surrounding slopes. Outside vessels may land here, but not on the exposed ridges.

The Remnant is not merely housed at Darsen; its chart, beacon, customs, and escort offices are Caldrin’s government. A Marshal presides, but an instrumented closure at a beacon can still end a route the city expected to use. Caldrin claims neither the debris field nor absolute safety. It holds the least-deadly known passage by maintaining knowledge that must be renewed continuously, and no larger power’s warrant substitutes for that work.

That practical authority lets a lesser world act in its own name amid the remains of Kalemdil, its former parent. Darsen can inspect a vessel, reject its chart, require an escort, or make it wait. It cannot still the Shatter. The city’s sovereignty rests on the narrower achievement of knowing when there remains a road at all.

Identity and Function

Function

Darsen is Caldrin’s principal settlement, primary authorized surface arrival point, and seat of the Remnant’s chart offices, beacon administration, customs inspectorate, and escort licensing. It receives vessels, revises routes against moving debris, inspects crossings, and assigns acknowledged escorts when required.

Identity and Function

Governance

The Remnant governs Caldrin from Darsen under a Marshal. Its chart, beacon, customs, and licensing offices may admit vessels, reject obsolete routes, close or authorize crossings, and vouch for escorts in Caldrin’s name. The authority extends to the maintained passage, not ownership of the Shatter. No Great or Major Moon’s warrant replaces its chart, and no off-moon institution governs Darsen.

Environment and Travel

Environment

Darsen fills one of Caldrin’s largest protected basins. Cold stone walls shelter the basin floor from smaller debris impacts and some disturbances moving through the Shatter. Landing fields, inspection halls, defensive structures, and illuminated navigation pylons occupy the open ground; residences, chart offices, and administrative chambers are cut into the surrounding slopes.

Environment and Travel

Travel Notes

Approach through an active beacon corridor and land only in the authorized customs basin; the open ridges are closed to outside vessels. Submit to inspection, carry a current Caldrin chart, and accept an acknowledged escort when the Remnant requires one. Debris motion can invalidate a route without warning. A captain presenting an old chart waits for a valid route rather than proceeding on the strength of a previous crossing.

Culture

The Twofold

Darsen’s Gloam practice joins endurance, caution, remembrance, and the safe carriage of knowledge through ruin. Sextons keep sealed sections that predate the Shattering, while every licensed escort carries an Abider because a failed crossing becomes an effort to preserve crew and vessel in cold and darkness. Dawn rites mark reopened passages, restored infrastructure, successful rescues, and the return of what was believed lost.
