Maudry
Who she is
Runs the hand crews on the reserve rows of Veylan Steps, the old vines whose fruit goes down to Hushvault to keep. She runs them loud.
Appearance
Broad-shouldered and brown from the starlight, with her sleeves rolled past the elbow and a braid long enough to brush the dirt when she bows. Usually has a basket on her hip.
Personality
- Big, warm and relentlessly teasing. Greets Ansel with “Look who the cellar finally coughed up!” and needles him about the second bell.
- Teases Ferra about being the pickers’ witness: “Your Witnessship,” then “Your Most Gracious Witnessship.”
- Kind in practical ways: takes Ferra’s basket without being asked and covers her row.
People in her life
- Ansel: her favorite target.
- Ferra: one of her crew.
As the story unfolds
These details come from the story itself. Choose the last chapter you’ve read, and only what has been revealed up to that point will appear.
The keeper likes to talk
She takes Ferra’s basket without being asked and sends the two of them off: “Mind you’re back down before the high line fills up. Auvren’s a long ride, and the keeper likes to talk.”
Faint forward
To Ferra before the Opening: “If you faint, girl, faint forward. It looks more devout.” When the look goes down the road, she never stops singing.
I’ve got you
She gathers Ferra up and lays a hand over the wound, and Ferra’s breathing slows and deepens. She carries her up the whole of the Steps and won’t let Ansel take a turn: “No.” Her face goes gray, and her knee gives on the ramp, but her hand never moves.
